Yep! Chia pets are seeded with Salvia hispanica. It's non-toxic and nutritious, in fact if you put one with the birds they'd probably eat it all off the clay figure pretty fast. xD

Most chia's use plain old grass seed (but I would check the label) so would be fine for your birds. Personally I don't think it would last long enough to even sprout in the cage and less then a day if you put it in already long.
let us know how you do with it

From what I remember about chia pets you just smear the clay with the seeds and it grows. You can "reseed" over and over if you'd like.

I'm going for sprouted wheatgrass, which is easily available because lots of health-types grow it for juicing. It doesn't take much light, its easy to sprout and grow, and its bound to be good for the birds.

I'm trying to locate a plastic tray that will slide in with the litter tray. The litter tray for my cage is all-metal. I had thought about planting directly in the litter tray, but that might lead to rust. Plus I'd need to find extra trays so I could sprout some while there's some in the cage already growing.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.
