Lovebirds in the wild
I went to visit my father in-law after Christmas in Cape St Francis South Africa, and great was my surprise when I saw that there were a flock of about 20 to 30 lovebirds flying around in the wild. South Africa has only 1 native specie of love bird, the peach-faced lovebird, and they occur in the Northern Cape, very far from this area. These looked like the yellow-collared lovebirds and other mutations, there were yellow, blue and white ones too. Someone's flock must have escaped and they seemed to be doing well right on the beach, because lots of people have birdfeeders in their yards. They are pretty wild and I could not get close to them. If I were living there, I would put out nest boxes for them. See the pic's.

Yes, thanks it is great. It is nice to fall asleep with the sound of the waves in the background. At night every few seconds, the light tower's light makes it sweep. The beaches are wide and open and not with very few people on it. Very much like Noordhoek, except the sand has a more yellow tinge. Every so often you see dolphins playing in the waves from the living room.

Great photos. I know that Arizona has a huge population of feral lovebirds.

I just wonder if they will be able to breed. There are no trees around to hollow out, only bushes and scrubs. Maybe they can get into the ceilings of houses.

Very nice! My first thought was what an unusual variety of mutations for a wild flock. Didn't cross my mind that perhaps they were someone's escaped flock. P.S. The majority of those we call Fischers Lovebirds around here. Bob
