Society Finches- free w/ cage in central Alabama - Taken

Post by FinchLady » Fri Jan 03, 2014 6:02 pm

This is a very sad post: I have to find a new home for my beautiful Society finches: 2 mated pairs- Sugar & Spice (solid white, fawn pied), and Hershey & Cocoa (chocolate pied). They come with white finch cage and separate rolling stand.
I can no longer afford the boarding bills when we are away. All four birds are proven parents.

I'm sorry you have to give up your birds. Are you gone for long periods of time? I leave my birds for weekends with no trouble at all.

Used to have a neighbor come in to freshen water/food when away for weekends. She is no longer available but said birds definitely needed fresh water twice a day. These four Socs will not drink out of tubes....make a mess out of their covered water dish. Even with extra waterers, they try to bathe in them (throw all the water out and get it yucky). Our trips to visit family are getting more frequent and longer.....'boarding' bills have skyrocketed.
Have been advertising since before Thanksgiving but can't find anyone interested in taking them.

My society finches used to make a lot of mess with their water dishes. Then, I purchased some water drinkers. They are very easy to use. I put these drinkers along with their old water dishes and all my societies learned to drink water from water drinkers within a day or two. Later I removed all their old water dishes. Now there is no more mess but whenever I want, I put some shallow water dishes for them to take bath.
Here is a picture of a water drinker from net,

I had just posted that I was going to add some other birds in with my Gouldians. No nests. Would they be okay with no nests?

Yes, they would be fine without nests. I sometimes remove their nest to stop egg laying cycle. They like to sleep in their nest but perch snuggled up together when I take it out. All four are friendly, sweet little birds. Want to find a good home for them.
How far are you from Montgomery?

I'm in Madison. I think it's an 1.5 hour drive.

Will be rehoming my Societies today. I'll be able to keep them together in their familiar cage. Sadly, I'll no longer keep birds....hutts to even write that. Perhaps if circumstances change I'll be able to get back into this fascinating hobby. Want to thank each one of you for all of your support and info. You are a great bunch and I'll miss the Forum.
Goodbye and God bless

Glad you found a home for your birds, but I am so sorry you are having to give up the hobby completely. I understand though, as I had to do the same thing years ago. I had finches in the 70's, but had to give them up because I traveled too much. I wasn't able to get back into the hobby until 2005 when I retired, but sometimes our lifestyle, job, other responsibilities keep us from enjoying this hobby. I hope that one day you will also be able to have birds as pets again, and I'm sure this forum will still be around for you.
