Sad today- lost a yellow gouldian

Post by danaday » Tue Jan 14, 2014 12:07 pm

Hi everyone
I am so bummed today. :( I lost one of my yellow juvenile that was still coloring up last night/this morning. I had just purchased him and two other ones about a month ago. They were doing great. But last night when the lights went out( set on a timer), I think he must of got startled and probably flew into the cage. I found him on the bottom of the flight cage and he was alive but not himself. I put him in a hospital cage with heat and etc. He passed away during the night sometime or early morning. I hate losing a bird, especially a young one.

That's very sad. No one but "us" really knows how tough that is. Where are you in Michigan? I'm in the Madison WI area, & have lots of young yellows.

Hi Dolly
I'm in southwest Michigan (battle creek). It is tough to lose any birds. Especially harder for me because I only keep gouldians, a few zebs. And I was just starting to get into the yellow mutations. Maybe when the weather is nicer I'll try my luck at getting new ones. :) Thanks for your support.

Sorry for your loss. As you have said, it is harder when they are young, as you don't expect to lose them at that age.

So sad when you lose one. Sorry to hear that. ((hugs)).
I always keep a low watt red nightlight in my aviary. I comes on 15 minutes before the lights go out, and stays on 15 minutes after the lights come back on in the morning. The birds seem to know when they see the red light that it's time to get situated for the evening. (except the Splendids and Bourkes.. their little feet scampering around for seed sounds funny running up and down the aviary.)
Again, sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my RC Cordon Bleu hen several days ago and I'm still bumbed out. As the above finch person noted, people don't really understand the loss unless they are finch lovers. I focus on trying to find a new hen for the male. He use to fly to the top of the perch and call her until she reached him. She was mostly blind so it took her about 15 minutes and several attempts to get to the top to spend the night with him. So sad. Anyway, it does get easier as the days go by.

Dana, I feel your pain

I lost an adult yellow male on the weekend. I have no idea why, as he was perfectly fine the day before, chasing the girls around. It's very upsetting and doesn't get any easier unfortunately.

Best of luck going forward and I really hope that you have no more losses!
