I've been using Lauren's method with great success. And they are loving it. I offered it alone but then started combining it with their minerals to cut down on dishes in the cages and they are eating it right up.

This is what I do and my birds love it: http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11830

The only thing I omit is the sea salt.

I love that recipe! I've been meaning to get all the stuff to do it. The last pair of gouldians I added to the flock came with a lot of supplies including a bag of Higgins grit/calcium but it's a blue green color like one of the mixtures Candace used. What is it that gives it that color?

I save all the egg shells from the eggs I make my birds, as well as my family, in the freezer. When I get enough, I nuke them for several minutes, often stirring them up to prevent them from getting burned. Then I put them in a blender and chop them up into very tiny pieces. When I make egg food for the birds, I nuke the eggs and mash it up with a fork. I then add a bit of dried greens and some of the chopped egg shells. The greens re-hydrate enough from the moisture in the eggs and the birds seem to love it all. They dive right into it.

I am obsessed with peeling the membrane. If it rips I get a little upset inside.

It's ABBA's Mineral Grit Mix -> http://www.abbaseed.com/Seed_Products/M ... neral.html

It already has salt in the mix, which is why I don't put in additional sea salt. :)

What mineral gives it that blue/green color? I currently offer this:

and the four birds I recently got with all their supplies came with this:

The Higgins also has the bluish color to it so I was curious. I've been combining both of those plus my own eggshells. They really seem to love it.

I boil an egg for at least 20 minutes, get the shell off, remove the membrane then rinse the shell in hot water. Once cooled and dry I put it inside a baggie and crush it. Mine are so busy playing with millet and hoarding lettuce they haven't noticed the egg shells yet! Tomorrow I'm putting a bamboo plant inside their cage, I wanted to get them a spider plant but after 2 snowstorms the roads weren't safe to drive on so I could not get to the greenhouse today.
