I have been hearing and reading of pure cantaxanthin for canaries. Is this wise? Is it harmful to them of is it something that red factors need?

Red Factors don't need cantaxathin unless you plan on showing them. Cantaxanthin is added in small amounts to water or softfood to enhance the red coloration during feather growth (moulting). True Red factor canaries can achieve orange plumage with a diet full of carotene rich food like carrots (cooked carrots are best), red peppers and even greens like romaine, kale and spinach. The depth of red coloration achieved varies depending on the parentage of the birds. Cantaxanthin intensifies the natural red color already present in red factors.
