Remedies for new bird diarrhea

Post by Daisy » Sat Feb 01, 2014 8:42 pm

For a nervous new bird with diarrhea, no other symptoms, does anyone know of any good home remedies? The first thing I did was hold lettuce and grapes, then added some oatmeal to seed dish because I'm out of bran. I also do not have any kaopectate and our roads are too icy to even drive to the store. I read somewhere to give yogurt and I can buy some tomorrow but if he does not eat it, would there be something else to try before getting medication? He does not have severe diarrhea, its just runny and some spots are light green, :( must be from rapid transit (maybe the lettuce) but nevertheless it needs to return to normal. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

I've heard that yogurt can cause diarrhea, not positive but I wouldn't give that.
Light green in their droppings can mean a bacteria infection though it could also be from too much lettuce which could also cause watery droppings. I would see if the droppings go back to normal without the lettuce and grapes before you worry. Grapes can also cause watery droppings.
good luck

Good news to report: droppings are black/white, no light green, I think it was from being nervous and the lettuce. It also helped that I got her a roommate yesterday. Thismorning they got an apple with small amounts of lettuce, next time I go to the store I'll get some carrots and broccoli. I doubt they would eat yogurt, I will get some bran while I'm there, too. Its a relief knowing this has passed, no other symptoms and no resp infection. I can't wait until Spring when they can get some fresh air and feel some warmth.

What kind of lettuce are you feeding. Iceberg lettuce is mostly water with no real nutritional value. Since yogurt is a dairy product I wouldn't feed it to birds I'd look for a bird probiotic.

Thank you, the good news is it quit, I think it was from leaving the store and coming to a new home and having lettuce. I did hold the lettuce for a while and thankfully everything is back to normal.

I won't even buy iceburg lettuce, they got Romaine. It has passed and I think it was from leaving the store and coming here, I did hold the lettuce and everything is okay. I put oatmeal and some bread in their seed dish. I will look at probiotics next time I go to the store. Thank you for the tip on probiotics, sounds like a good idea to have this on hand just in case.

Yes it is, I figured it was from the change in leaving the store and coming here, its very scary for them, in fact its like trauma. I don't blame them for feeling this way, now that they're here they are so relieved. I bought them a spider plant but they don't know what to do with it, this may take them a while to realize its in their cage to nibble on.
