I found societies!! *pics added*

I'm sure some may consider this such a 'blah' post cause societies are widely available pretty much everywhere. That is not the case here though. Bird import is prohibited by law here and due to that whatever gets sneaked in is usually way overpriced.

A normal gouldian pair costs $300-400
A society finch pair costs approximately $120!

That is why I never bothered getting any societies but recently my gouldians and star finches started breeding and there are loads of abandoned fertile eggs - that made me seriously consider spending $120 on a society pair.

But luckily for me a shipment of zebra finches arrived yesterday and to my surprise there were a few societies mixed in with them!!! And the best part is, they were priced at $25 each only!! :shock:

I immediately bought three (2 males and 1 female) and they're currently in a quarantine cage, pics to follow soon!!

Wow, why are the laws so strict? Does it have something to do with disease?

Congrats on getting some Societies. With those prices, they will pay for themselves very quickly. Since you have a hen, you could let her have a clutch or two to swap out with other Society owners, then you could have several unrelated pairs.

Exactly Sally, I'm thinking of letting them raise their own clutch first to see how well they'll do. Right now I'm giving the hen recovery time, her tail is badly plucked from the zebras at the store :x

Yep because of the disease and the laws became even worse once they discovered a few cases of bird flu in one of the neighbor countries.

They lifted the ban from a few countries recently but on the other hand they complicated the import process, birds must have health certificates issued 2 months prior to their arrival and then once they're here they are quarantined for another 2 months which is absolutely ridiculous! Especially considering the fact that bird flu was transmitted into these neighbor countries through wild birds, not domestic pets.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the comments!! Will post pics once the hen is doing better.

BTW now I totally see why lots of people over here love societies!!

BTW the light colored one with no tail is the female, as I mentioned before they were mixed with zebras - so they were quite abused in there. Fortunately the feathers are growing back.

Could anyone tell me what type of societies they are based on their colors?

They are a pair of beautiful "Fawn" Societies. Very nice and her tail will grow back - no problem there. Congratulations again!
