I also use the Mike Fidler method, mainly because it saves me time. I can sprout (chit) a large amount of seed, then I put it in the freezer. Then I can scoop out whatever amount I need each day. I think this method is practical for those who have a large number of birds. I do the same when I make eggfood--I make a large batch, using up to 6 dozen eggs, then freeze the eggfood. If I had a small number of birds, I'd probably make fresh every couple of days.

For some reason it has never occurred to me to freeze sprouted seed, even though I already do that with egg food. I always imagined that some nutrition will be lost, though perhaps it's not much and is worth the compromise? I may give it a try.

Newbies be aware, though, that frozen sprouts will turn bad quickly after thawing because they are no longer alive and growing, so take care not to give your birds any more than they will eat in a single day. Yes, you would probably do that with live sprouts as well, but it's extra important with thawed ones.

Freezing does not take away any nutrition, in fact it preserves it. I never noticed my frozen sprouts going bad quickly but then again they never last long anyway. :)

Finally got to watch this video. I am going to have to try it out. My problem is finding pure seed without some pellets mixed into it. Does anyone have a particular source they use when purchasing seed for sprouting? Or for that matter what kind of seed? I'm sure I can get the local pet store or the feed store to order me some...

This one works awesomely for me. Nearly every seed sprouts and begins sprouting in about 12 hours. Bob

Oh - thanks for sharing!

I just started with the tea strainer method and it makes enough for 2 days for 5 birds and 1 chick. But it would be nice to make a little stockpile!

Thank you Sally. Do you have a link to the Mike Fidler method you mentioned? I don't have a ton of birds but a method that produces more that I could freeze might be better.

Here's a link to the youtube video. This is part 1 of 3, but I think when you go to this one, you will see the other two parts posted.
