Wet, swollen vent but not egg bound

The yellow on her abdomen is fat.
Did you send those pictures to Laraine? If Laraine doesn't know what something is she will ask Dr Rob Marshall, a well known vet. I really think that is the best way to go if you don't have a vet available.
Is there a chance that she had a prolapse and the breeder pushed it in before selling her?
I will be shocked if this is anything that Scatt, Worm Away or Ronivet will fix.

I agree with Debbie! That poor girl needs an avian vet...and Laraine will consult with Dr. Rob. Just email her the photos you uploaded here and she will get back to you asap. Best of luck to your little girl

Thank you for all of your replies! The yellow abdomen definitely turned out not to be fat...Here are pictures after 10 days of Ronivet. She started getting better after the first day on it.

Oh I forgot - after 3 days on Ronivet, the antibiotic Trimethloprim Sulfa was added to the Ronivet mix. It could have been a soft egg and the Ca Plus did it. It could have been a protozoan infection, and a secondary bacterial infection. Who knows. Im just glad she's improving.

I wonder how long it will take for her "tutu" hole to look normal.

She is (obviously) getting much better but I am concerned about her vent size. She seems to have lost that muscle that we use to "stop" the flow, and her waste winds up getting stuck in and around her vent. I've trimmed around it to help her. Debbie, I did put in a question to Laraine. At first it came back as undeliverable but I wll try again. Is this a strange, weird problem that no one has an answer to?

How is your girl doing? I was looking for info on wet vent's myself and came across your thread. I have 2 outside flights with Gouldians from a couple of months old to 6 years old. I have noticed a number of them in both flights (on seprate sides of the house) have wet vents (small amounts of fecal matter on the feathers around the vent). They seem to feel fine and are not showing any sign of illness. I only even noticed because I was catching them up for routine ASM treatment I do twice a year and doing an inventory to match up with my records. Just wondering if I should treat with Ronex. The temps have suddenly gotten very cold here, dropping into the mid to upper 20s at night and I don;t want them to have to deal with anything else while they are trying to stay warm. I have supplemental heat in the flights but want to get this cleared up.

My girl is doing better, still working on the vent problem. Laraine from ladygouldian.com was very helpful and even talked with a vet friend about my girls problem. They do not think that my medicines caused her to get better....but then there is no explanation. She suggested using witch hazel on her vent to try to shrink it, that that technique had worked for a friend with a canary with the same problem. We are only on the 2nd day on that so I'll keep everyone posted.

About your goulds with the wet vent...do you provide fresh greens? Try taking them away for a week to 10 days and see if their vents clear up. I have one yellow back female that would suffer from a messy, wet vent, but acted normal, like she felt fine. After posting about it here, I learned that it was as simple as: her body just can't handle fresh greens. I have my goulds in various cages (2 different flights, the one of course in a hospital cage, and a breeding cage which has a blue pair in it right now). I just have to provide dry greens in whichever cage she is in. I use Kaytee bird greens, that has a mix of Alflfa, parsley, carrots, spinach, peppers and apples. Good luck!

Hi fellow finchers! I just wanted to give an update on my female that had the horrible looking, swollen vent. She has fully recovered and has molted into a beautiful, lilac chested green back. Only sign that she ever had a problem is that she has kept the habit of sometimes "bouncing" after a poo. I have no idea how long she suffered in that original condition I got her in, but I took her out today to trim her nails, and found it hard to even FIND her vent! I wish I would have taken a picture while she was out, but I've included a picture (not as clear as the others, since the camera was on zoom, in the flight cage). Not sure what cleared it up, but the combination of good food, Ronivet, Scatt, Calcium Plus and Worm Away (and time) cleared it up!
