Swollen foot

Post by shae.ray27 » Sat Feb 08, 2014 1:49 pm

I have a little female zebra about a year old with a foot that frequently swells up and turns red and she seems to pick at it. The first time it happened I brought her into my local bird store (the owner of which was trained by an avian vet so he is more knowledgeable than most). At this point both feet were involved but one was more swollen and red than the other. He believed she had gotten her feet caught somewhere in her cage. So I took her home and set her up in a different cage and her feet gradually healed and all seemed well. Now its about 6 months after the first episode and it is happening again. I see no where in this cage where she could have gotten her foot caught. Unfortunately the store owner I usually go to suddenly died a few months ago. What could be causing her feet to swell? And any ideas how to treat it?

Gout and bumblefoot both spring to mind. Try a web search for those and see if it looks similar.
Good luck.

Is it a problem of mite? Just to mention one possibility.

How is you zebra? Did you figure out what caused the leg swelling? Has the finch been treated for ASM or worms? There are several possiblities, even an allergy to something?
