I need advices, my finch has a bad leg

Post by apfii » Wed Feb 26, 2014 1:22 pm

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I would like some advices.

I own a few zebra finchs and one of them has hurt his leg or something. I took picture if anyone know what to do with that. It seems pretty bad but I didn't notice anything before yesterday, he seemed really healty and was very active before that and today he can't even stand on the bad leg and he's not quite active :(

My parents don't want me to go see a avian vet for such a tiny bird so I would appreciate if anyone could give me some tips that I could try at home.

I would look online for a broad spectrum antibiotic check in the files on this site. I would also make sure he has multiple types of perches and even maybe some soft flat platforms to perch on while he heals I might even wipe his leg down with a very small amount of betadine. Don't use ointments as they are greasy and you'll end up with a mess. If he doesn't have a nest I might add one with something soft he can nest in so he can rest off his legs. Good luck.

Thank you!
Also should I put him alone in a smaller cage? I don't want to cause him too much stress. :?

apfii it could be that your bird got caught on something and hurt itself when getting dislodged.

You could wash the wounded area with a little warm salt water to clean it up and get a good look at what is really wrong. However it does not seem too bad and the bleeding has stopped.
Betadine would help and a little ointment to keep the wound supple will help speed up the healing or the scab may crack every time the bird uses the foot.
If indeed your boy got his foot stuck, that could also account for him not wanting to use it. The bruising and pulling hurts them and usually they are tender for a few days.

Make sure he is as comfortable as possible with food and water on a flat surface so he does not have to balance to eat etc. I would say leave him in with rest, so long as they don't start picking on him.
Zebbies can sometimes do that.

Hi there,

it might be bumblefoot. I've seen it on canaries and budgies before.

I wiki'ed it, but you'd probably need more information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblefoot_(infection)

It is treatable.

It could also be an injury. Birds have a very active metabolism and it could have become infected very quickly.

Good luck with your bird. I hope he/she recovers.

Hi, I have added an article the discusses care for various injuries from a source that is often referred to:
http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/features_bbones.php

To me it does not look infected so I would ensure the cage is as clean as possible to keep it that way. Personally, I avoid using antibiotics unless I am positive there is an infection. Redness, swelling, pus.
An avian vet recommended the following product for my lovebirds. I do not see why it could not be used on your finches foot. Maybe someone else will comment on that.

thank you so much everyone!!
So I added a nest in the cage. He went in it a few time in it but he seems to prefer his habitual perches for now.
Also I went to the pharmacy but there is no longer betadine where I live. But the pharmacist gave me other tips.

He doesn't seems so miserable, he's even singing at the moment c:
His name is Pavel btw if anyone wanted to know.

Yeah I give them all sort of names, his companion name is Chen for example.
He's 3 or 4 years old I think, I don't remember exactly when he was born ^^'
