Question about direct sunlight.

Post by livinonaprayer » Tue Oct 28, 2008 3:54 pm

Just a quick question. How much direct sunlight should I allow the finches?
Or, how long should they be in direct sunlight?
Thanks. :)

As much as they want...just give 'em some shade to get out of it if they want.

Thanks. They seem to have a ball when it's sunny. They have some shade in the cage too. I guess when they had enough sun they'll know to go in the shade. Yes?

approx 1/3 of my aviary roof is wire the rest is fully enclosed.
the birds sit out in the sunlight for as long as they want to. the gouldians seem to do so more than any of the other species. but thinking about it my gouldians may be demented, have seen a couple of them lately having dustbath's like my quail do.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Thanks for posting this question, it was one I was wondering about.
My new cage will be on wheels, and I want to wheel them over to the window so that about 2/3 of the cage is getting sunlight and 1/3 is in shade. Or maybe vice versa until I see how hot it gets in the summer!

Thanks Mick. I didn't want to bake the little fellas. And what's up with the dustbaths? I've only seen sparrows do that.

not sure what made them have a dustbath. only thing I can think of is hat 2 days before it occurred I had replaced the old sand on the aviary floor with new. the new sand was a finer grit.
havent seen it happen since though, been taking the camera with me lately just in case.

It must have felt good to roll around in it. :D I love seeing birds do that.

Now that's a new one on me. Looks like she must have seen a dog doing it and thought it looked like fun. :D
