Looks like a hole on side of Gouldian's head

Post by rancho2 » Mon Mar 24, 2014 12:06 pm

Can anyone tell me what this 'hole' on the right side of Blue's head is? He's had it for awhile and he's not being pecked at by any of the other birds.

i don't think so but i'll catch him tonight to see. Could it be mites? Despite dosing for mites there still seems to be a problem with them. At least for one of the society babies (3 mos. old). I gave everyone Scatt on 3/7 but one of the babies was curled up on a branch breathing hard and clicking. I gave him another drop and he appears to be doing better, flying around and not curling up.

His back looks like he's molting, so maybe that spot on his head is due to molting also. Can't see too well on the pic.

Society's don't usually become infested with air sac mites, are you sure they don't have a respiratory infection instead of mites?

i really don't know how to tell the difference since the symptoms are so similar. would it hurt to treat them all in case it is respiratory? and if so, what would you recommend to treat with? also, i've not seen anyone molt yet but having not been through it, not sure what it should look like.

Scatt would be the treatment of choice for ASM for me and it stays in their system for 21 days. Seeing how you've already treated with Scatt I would not think it's ASM.

Here's an article about respiratory infections:

not always easy to know which treatment will work

thanks debbie, i'll probably give them all tetratex for the next 5 days and see if that makes everyone feel better.
