New red factor canary....is he/she too plump?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

If you don't hear this - it's not air sac mites. Wouldn't hurt to treat with Scatt, anyway. If it's some other URI, you may be better suited using a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Ornacyn Plus, however. P.S. Some VERY SLIGHT tail bobbing is normal with canaries when they sleep. Bob
Thanks for the info....I got Pumpkin out but didn't hear anything except the sound of him trembling, ha ha! I let him fly about for a minute then picked him up again. I heard a sound when he breathed a couple of times, I guess you could say a click but it was only when he was really out of breath and it didn't last more than about 4 or 5 breaths....

Now I don't know WHAT to do:-( I will try the Ornacyn Plus though, is that usually effective?
Thanks again!!

So I can't seem to get Ornacyn Plus....it's been discontinued and no one seems to carry it! :-( Is there something else that is similar?

hi StarSpun, you can still do the s76 treatment it doesn't hurt them and is good as a preventative treatment (recommended dosage in the water for 2 consecutive days a week, you do this for a period of 3 weeks)

personally, i keep the following meds in store just in case i need them: S76, wormaway , a respiratory infection and a broad spectrum antibiotic and a med for coccidiosis oh also probiotics. hehehe it seems like much, but they come in small packages and i don't have a lot of birds so i order 1 small btl of each.

what i did and what i was advised when i got my new birds was as follow:
week 1
mon-tuesday i treated with s76
wed-thur-frid i treated for coccidiosis
sat probiotics
week 2
mon-tuesday i treated with s76
wed i treated for worms
thur probiotics
week 3
Mon-tues S76

That's a great idea, thanks for the post....I will follow this exactly. What kind of probiotic did you use? What make? I am still trying to find worm away. What did you use for the Coccidiosis?

Thanks again!

i managed to get morning bird products for all of the above, not an easy thing when you live in Lebanon hehe but i still managed to find someone who imported some.

i also have versele-laga for coccidiosis .

but i think you can find all you need at morning bird website.

Hi Starspun,

what beautiful birds! Just be careful if your canary IS a boy. They can become very cranky/aggressive in breeding season. He might pick on your little zebra hen. SHe looks like a sweetie! I keep my canary, Kevin, separate from my other birds in spring as he picks on anything.

He has a toy discoball to talk to.

Awww a discoball? That is AWESOME!
I am thinking that HE, is actually a SHE! We cleared up the mites, and still no singing. Just chirping once in a while....
