I have all my nestboxes hung/attached to the outside of my breeding cages. I think the more space for the finches inside the cage - the better and happier they will be. Every inch counts since we can't give them their natural habitat.
And I agree with Paul, it certainly makes checking the eggs/chicks much easier and less disturbing to the parent finches by having the boxes on the outside.

ok, my builder went a little crazy or lazy. I asked for cages 32x20x20 and he made me 48x24x24. Bigger is better I guess. He said it was the size of wood he had. They feel like army tanks, very cumbersome. I am sure the finches will be happy.
Ok I was going to paint them... What kind of paint to I need to use?

Your cages sound like mansions....I hope you can post some photos when you are all finished.
I was wondering....are any certain colors a better choice for the cages? I would be curious as to whether the birds react to certain colors better than others? Like if a darker would promote breeding better than a light one?

Eggshell blue or a light green are sensible colours...as for cage fronts I've searched for ages and can't find any in the States...Now 'Orchid' have wrapped up...They were one of the few companies that carried European goods...If there are others I cant find any.FeatherHarp wrote:Your cages sound like mansions....I hope you can post some photos when you are all finished.

There are I believe one or two large societies in the States that promote canary breeding....Contacting one of these might turn up a link for cage fronts.

We just had our local bird show/mart this last week and should have asked the vendor then. I'll start a search by word of mouth if nothing else. Or, I could salvage old fronts off cages with the right dimensions, paint them and attack them to the wood fronts.
I went with a light green when I painted my aviary - works fine. Too dark and I think I would lose some birds due to blending in. As a matter of fact I think I subconessly(sp) choose a color and tinted it down to a color that is not seen in my birds. Like teal or a blue that is not in gouldians.
