Couple of lighting questions

Post by saulosirds » Tue Apr 22, 2014 10:41 am

I know this has been hashed out more times then can be counted but my A D D makes it a challenge for me some days.

I thought I saw a thread or an article that talks about black lights and how they can help to regulate the sex of chicks and will help to equal out sex production. If anyone can help direct me to that article, I would really appreciate that.

Also, has anyone found LEDs that they are happy wiith and might have a link to a manufacturer?

And last, I was reading a thread (should respond to that there but the whole A D D thing has made me lose it) talking about Kalvin in the fluorescents. I use the 6500K tubes in all my 4' strips and I only have one bird out of the 80 or so that has any feather issues. The rest of the birds look better now then anytime before. But that is just my experience and what works for me.

Here is a link to an article by Robert Black about using black lights. I was getting more females than males with BCCBs and Strawberries, and when I started using a black light in the bird room, I started getting more females. Not scientific, but it did seem to work for me.

Debbie276 has linked a great article on lighting before, I will try to find it. Kelvin should be between 5000 and 5500, I think it said, with CRI 92 or higher. (I may have these a bit wrong, but close.) The difficulty is finding a bulb that is the correct K and CRI that will fit the fixtures you may have. I have about decided that I need to find the bulbs I want first, then find fixtures to fit those bulbs, as I can't find proper bulbs for some of my fixtures at all.

I have no experience with LED, but one of these days, the way some bulbs are no longer being produced, we won't have access to fluorescent lights at all. I've looked at a few LED lights, but they don't say what K or CRI they have, so I didn't want to spend the higher price for them.

Has anyone ever used T-5 bulbs over their birds? I have some T-5 ballasts with timers I could put over my big flights that are just languishing in a box. And I never thought about using LED's. I have them on a majority of the fish tanks I service, but have never thought about putting them on the birds. I even have some of those laying around. Even if they aren't the correct spectrum, it would certainly brighten the room up some.

Oops, I forgot to include the link, and now I realize I stated that sentence all wrong anyway. Actually, I was getting mostly males with my BCCBs and Strawberries. Another breeder told me to put a black light in my bird room, and then I started getting more females.

Edit: Oops I responded to the wrong post. Dang cell phone!!

Colt most all mine are T8 or T5. I have some old school T12 and all my 8s and 12s have 6500k bulbs in them. My cabinet breeders have T5. I use 6500k bulbs and all of my birds seem to be in good health feather-wise but this is just what seems to work for me.
