Rest well Harley
Unfortunately we had to put Harley down today. He had a freak accident. We left the house and he was just fine. We came back about 3 hours later, he had gotten his foot caught in a tightly wove wicker nest. He liked to take his blueberrys there to eat them. This has been in his cage for months. So..... Somehow a piece of the wicker, made its way in between his breeding band and leg. So naturally he fluttered, unfortunately severly breaking his leg, by the time we got home, it was bleeding, broken, and severly stressed. We rushed him to 24 ER, they triaged him, saying we "could " amputate his leg, but chances are with the trama he had been through he may not make the night. Or the advised thing to do, was to euthanize him. Sadly, we had to. I am deeply saddened, I looked forward to him singing with the sunrise. He had such a personality. He knew each of our family members, and called to me in a high trill when it was time for breakfast. I'm feeling blue tonight.

Hi Harley 2013 (Tammie?),
I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your little bird. Its very sad when something like this happens. You did the kindest thing for your bird, as the amount of handling for your bird with the vet would probably have been very traumatic for him. I had a female canary where I broke her leg accidentally when it got caught in the cage when I was putting the top of the cage back on. They pinned it and she healed, but she died several months later from a respitory disease/illness, and I think being handled so much, and the trauma of the process probably contributed to this.
My current canary, is 12 years old, and I have very passive/gentle treatment with him, as he gets very stressed with ANY changes to his routine or cage. Taking in the car to the vet can result in him collapsing from stress. He's OK, but I understand why you'd have to do this. If something happens to my canary, I would do the same thing. He's too old to be handled daily, or cope with stress like this.
Good luck for the future.
Kind Regards
Zebrafincher

So sorry to hear about the loss of Harley. It is impossible to completely accident-proof our bird's environment, but it is still not easy to lose them.

Re: Rest well Harley
Sorry for your loss. I had probably the exact same accident if it were a band that caused the leg to get caught on the wicker nest. I've even posted about it here when the subject of banding comes up. My bird did survive with one leg and is still alive today - still singing up a storm. I just hope that the animal E.R. didn't jump the gun in advising you to euthanize. Don't want to make you feel worse, just stating for the benefit of others. Again, sorry. Bob
