New Goudlians - I have no idea about Genetics HELP!

Post by Mands » Mon Apr 14, 2014 3:29 am

HI all.

I already have a pair of Gouldians that are 'Normals' and I just got a new pair (pic below).

Where is the best place to learn about their genetics etc. Like splits and hidden genes and what they will throw etc.

I have no idea and would love to learn. I would love some help.

There is no visual way of identifying what gouldians are split to. You would have to breed them to see if they are split.

A good source to learn is through Tiffany's site:
http://www.gouldiansgalore.com/genetics.html

Genetic Calculator:
http://www.gouldianfinches.eu/sk/geneti ... a/english/

Visually, you have a:

RH WB GB male
BH(YTB) WB GB hen
Brian

Gouldians, Java Sparrows, Cape Doves

birdclaws Thank you so much Brian. There is a lot for me to learn and right now its all pretty confusing. However, I will continue to read everything that you have suggested. I hope I get there and understand it all. I really love the Gouldians and would love to learn about them further.

Ginene Thanks my lovely, I will be sure to keep up the pics.

I suggest http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... /index.php

You may not understand everything at the beginning, but read again and again, eventually you will understand.

Well one thing I can tell you at least from looking at your pair is that your hen is BH YTB which means genetically she is orange headed.

I actually think that's the perfect option for pairing to a RH male when testing for splits.

This pair together would only produced white breasted offspring.

If the father is not split for head colors you would get RH/BH/OH WB males and RH/OH WB Hens.

I very rarely find pure RH males, though - so if you get BH birds you know he's split for BH and if you get OH birds you know he's split for OH. If you get all three, you know he's carrying all three!

ISN'T GENETICS FUN!
