Bag of Bugs, Are insects necessary for finches?

My societies also eat there share of mealworms,seems like all my finch's eat as many as I will give them .I save the most for ones that are breeding or have chicks.I have a gouldians thats feeding 3or4 baby's she can't get enough.
But I agree that most of mine really don't need them but like me I eat a lot of things I don't need but I like it $\:D/$

Many of the mealworm dealers are still limiting their shipments to present customers only, not taking on any new customers. All you can do is try.

Mealworms are also available from FairestFinches and I've read on this forum that you can freeze those mealworms. Sounds economical to me.

I think those are the freezdried meal worms, have you used these for your finch's.? I had a order of live that got to hot back in the summer that all died I tried to give to the birds while they were still fresh but they wouldn't eat at all

I haven't tried them yet (they are on order for me at this time). Another person here says she had great success with them for her finches and that when thawed out they are like fresh and not dried at all. I'll append the link to that thread shortly...

Took a look at fairest finch canned mealworms they aren't freeze dried like I thought might give them a try when i need more worms

No, she's referring to the canned mealworms. Mine were also not crazy about the dried ones - would only eat them if chopped up really fine and disguised in with the eggfood. But once they got the canned ones and realized they were good, well they definitely won't bother with the dried ones now!

I order from Fairest Finches. I only have the two little finches (once the babies are gone at the end of this month). So I was concerned about the canned ones going bad before I could use them up. Apparently they keep a long time in the fridge, too, but the manufacturer said it was also OK to freeze, so I did. If you defrost them carefully (so they don't explode...gross), they are just as juicy as the live ones, and mine also love to squeeze them like toothpaste!

Sorry, see I posted at the same time. Anyway, try them. If they won't eat them do what Michelle suggested. Chop small and put in with eggfood. Then gradually chop in larger pieces. In a couple of days mine suddenly realized that they were real food, and when I tossed the whole ones in they went nuts for them!

Well I guess they aren't taking any new customers Did you check on the small mealworms,they don't say out of stock I guess it is funny

I have also ordered from grubco.com as BCAMP suggested and i've had nothing but great things from them. The mealworms look fresh and healthy and they last a long time. My birds devour them at first site.
