New Parrot Finches
I went this morning to a breeder for 2 female seagreen parrot finches. From there I drove to Monotwine to swop one of the females for a male. In the end she took pity on me and gave me 2 youngsters. Here's some pic's of the new lot with also a picture of golden breasted babies. My male red head parrot is smitten with the new seagreen female.

Congratulations. The seagreens are a very nice mutation. Of course I'm fond of all the PFs, and I find them easy to get along with their mixed aviary friends.

All happy. Glad I could help you get hooked on parrot finches! Know they gone to a good home. They will colour up quickly at your place too. your aviary is more sheltered than mine.
Congrats on the baby waxbill.

Re: New Parrot Finches
Thanks Monique. It is not the worst addiction to have. The birds seem very happy and at home. All the PF 's seem to like to sit against the side of the mesh. Maybe I must put some vertical or near vertical branches in strategic places. I always fear the bird's feet will get stuck in the mesh.

Congrats on the new additions and the chicks, the parrot finches are fabulous birds and full of character, Goldbreasts are on my wish list after i build a few more cages during the summer.

Re: New Parrot Finches
MariusStegmann Congrats!
I just started attempting to breed Parrot Finches a little over a month ago. I have two pair. One pair are the parents of the hen I have and she has an unrelated male. Parents have 4 eggs, and the kids have laid two clutches but tossed the eggs, or buried them. So I took the nest out and am starting over with pure coco fiber.
Can't wait to see your PF's grow up! Good luck!

Re: New Parrot Finches
Thks Nana. I love the way that they are always busy. I suppose that if they were not so active, they would be too fat to fly, because they eat non-stop. Good luck with breeding your parrot finches. I have a 3-4 month winter to go through, before my birds can breed. It will give them time to mature. I hear parrots breed very young.

Marius, come Nov/Dec I will have some beautiful Gouldians looking for a new outdoor home. I think they would look amazing in your aviary

Rox. I will have to close my aviary up much more before getting gouldians. I have always stayed away from gouldians before because they look just to pretty to be real. Maybe it is the logical progressions for me. I am pretty fedup with waxbills though. We will have to see Rox.

I gave up on waxbills too! They were too frustrating with tossing chicks. I love the parrot finches and Green Singers and Owls. Those are my fav finches.

Re: New Parrot Finches
Marius, totally agree that they do need that bit of extra TLC. I've only had problems with hens though in the cold weather or birds that have been bred indoors - first cold spell last year and the indoor bred birds all died. Outdoor bred, I have lost a male or 2 but those were in the middle of summer and who knows what reason caused their death. Of my own outdoor bred birds, I have only lost 2 out of the youngsters bred this year. I will see at the end of winter what the final count is. If you would like colour only, get a couple of boys. They seem pretty tough during the colder weather, as long as there is some shelter out of wind/rain. At least you get less wind than I do!
Waxbills, I feel your frustration. I'm going to up the game next season with livefood and see what happens. I'm fortunate enough to work for a large wine company, so I actually got the go ahead to go to the vineyards in spring and cut down the seeding grass that grows between the vines. That should also help encourage them. I just need to time it with the farm managers so that I get it before they spray the vines.

Re: New Parrot Finches
Very interesting reading. Whow...do we love our birds or what??? I too love my waxbills and get frustrated but they are so beautiful...If you guys give up, what can someone like me expect from my beauties? You need to keep trying to breed waxbills so the rest of us can learn from you. I've gotten so much from this forum and all of your experiences. Don't give up!
