Lack of Gouldians on the West Coast

Post by passiflorafinch » Wed May 28, 2014 10:48 am

Is there some reason why there are so many breeders in Florida and Texas and so very few out in California? It seems odd to me.

There are lots of breeders in California, I think it's just that they don't advertise a lot. San Diego has a very active bird club with many very experienced finch breeders. I've found the best way to get birds is to network, get to know some of these breeders. Then when you want something, they will often be able to refer you to a reputable breeder.

Have you been to any of the bird marts in your area? I know the bay area bird marts have plenty of gouldians to choose from.

Yeah, I was in contact with the San Diego society a couple months ago and there weren't a lot of people doing gouldians. I was at the Pamona bird mart in March and there was only one guy with gouldians... lots of other good stuff to see though. I'm just surprised that no ones a really big presence out here. There aren't any gouldian breeders on the forum in SoCal?

I have contacted a friend in So. Cal. who raises Gouldians, but she works with normals, not mutations. She may know of someone you could contact. I have also gotten in touch with a friend of mine in this area who does ship, she will be contacting you. Gary (ac12) is in the SF area, but he may know of other breeders.

It's been tough, I contacted basically everyone that mentioned gouldians on a couple of directories and only a handful of people got back to me, some didn't ship and a couple had gotten out of it altogether. It's been a frustrating.
