My Baby Gouldian

Post by Sally » Mon May 26, 2014 12:46 pm

Actually, not mine, but I am taking care of it till it is weaned. My friend was taking it to work while hand feeding it, but it is now so loud that there is no way to discreetly slip this little one into the workplace! It is adorable, at least I think so!

I had a few Gouldians back in 2007, I think it was, but got rid of them to work with the waxbills. I have been so discouraged lately working with the waxbills that I considered giving up on birds completely. Friends have suggested I work with an easier species for a while, and I think this is my friend's attempt to get me interested again, as she even said I can keep this one.

My baby is doing quite well and growing so fast. I don't think it will be too many more days until it fledges. Here are two photos from the last feeding, one before lunch and begging like crazy, one after lunch, quite content.

Sally great job!!!! You should go with an easier species. And maybe you don't even have to breed. Species like goulds and societies would be great for you to get back into finches. An you are doing a great job.

Max I don't know a lot about Gouldians, but I think it might be something like 4-6 months till it finishes its first molt. As far as colors, I haven't really checked into it too much, though the breeder said she thought this one was black head, possibly split to blue, she would need to check her records. I will probably return this one to the breeder once it is weaned. I am a big fan of normals, so if I would decide to get back into Gouldians, I would love to have a pair of RH PB GB normals, no splits. I first fell in love with all those gaudy colors years ago.

But I am so enjoying having a little one around again. It perched on my finger today for its noon feeding, and it no longer needs the warmth of a brooder.
