Just adopted a pair of Society Finches from my son-in law. I've had previous experience with Javas & Gouldians, but haven't had any birds for about a couple of years now.
Anyways, I am intending to put a seed order in at the much recommended Herman Brothers. I see that some Society Finch owners on this site have noted many of their birds' preference for the larger Parakeet seed. Consequently, I intend to serve my birds a 50/50 Parakeet/Finch mix. Is this a good idea, & if so, which of the many varieties offered up by Hermans would be best for Societies?

Re: Society Finch/Parakeet Diet Mix
I used to order from Herman Bros. and loved their mixes, but the shipping costs were killing me. I used the E.M. Finch mix, and at the time I had a combination of Australian grass finches and African waxbills. I don't think I had Societies at the time.
The Soak Seed is just that, for soaking or chitting seed, so you would not feed that as a general diet. I would ask them about the fortified diets, as I see that they contain pellets. I don't like to use colored pellets, as they change the color of the poop and can be misleading as to whether the poop is normal or not.
I don't know anything about the other mixes. Others can answer as to what mixes they have used.
