Good quality seed

Post by CommaHolly » Thu Jun 05, 2014 5:08 pm

does anyone have any brands of good quality finch seed for daily feeding that they'd recommend?

the seed I have is from the pet store, and something tells me, there might be better out there.

thanks!

If you just have two finches, the Econutrition at PetSmart is a good brand. I order the finch seed mix from Herman Brothers, but I buy in bulk since I have so many finches to feed.

The Ecotrition, red bag is pretty good. http://www.petco.com/product/12803/eCOT ... MgodP0UAAw There used to be an organic one they made that I loved but they only make it for the bigger birds now, not finches. I usually buy in bulk from Bird Supply of New Hampshire. https://www.birdsupplynh.com/catalog/pr ... db6de83b5d I really liked their bulk seed. The issue lately is the ingredients are constantly changing. What it says on the list isn't always what is in the bag...as it used to be. But here is the link and they have other seeds and you can communicate with them. I do also like Herman's seed as@finchmix22 said. https://www.birdsupplynh.com/catalog/pr ... db6de83b5d It's good to have a lot of choices. I remember the day I was scrambling to buy good seed. They only had Kaytee brand here, 35 miles away and it was outdated.

:) I like that it doesn't have big seeds that get wasted as other finch seed I've bought.

I use a blend of Higgins Vita Seed and their Fruit and Veggies plus blend in a bag of plain keet seed.

My birds and I are happy with Kaytee Supreme. I generally add more white millet for the Societies/Javas and red millet for the waxbills - just because those are favorites - but it doesn't have a lot of seeds my birds don't like (like flax - nobody eats that stuff).
It's reasonably priced and readily available.

I buy mine from a local distributor in Atlanta. I had been buying it from the bird shows, but the distributor is easier. LOL

I buy seed by the pound from my local feed store. I make my own mix from 10 pounds of Canary, 10 pounds of Finch, 5 pounds of Organic Laying crumbles (Yes, the kind for Chickens), and a pound of sunflower chips. To that, I'll usually add a small bag of Ecotrition, or a few pounds of Abba's Song mix or Sun Seed's Vita Finch for good measure. All said and done, it comes out to less than 75¢ per pound. Check your local feed stores and see what they carry. Sometimes they will carry the same exact brands as the pet stores, but at a much better price. I know you're only feeding two Finches, but it adds up!
