Can a female be housed with several males?

Can a female be housed with several males?

Post by Pugwinkle » Wed Nov 19, 2008 6:51 am

I'm new to birds and I have 7 finches, 5 Society finches, all males, 1 zebra finch male and 1 female zebra. I just bought the zebra female for the male and I have them in a seperate cage but I found out she is only 4 months old so I don't want them to breed.

I would like to put them all together in the one larger cage rather than having the female all alone but I'm wondering if all these males will try to breed with her.

Or should I just leave the male and female together in a seperate cage and dispose of any eggs if she starts laying at this young age?

You're going to need to try and do whatever possibly to prevent her from laying eggs. A hen at that age laying eggs is asking for trouble.

I don't think it would matter if you keep her with one male Zebra or 5 society males....they will undoubtedly try to breed.
