I never wanted this day to come!

Post by Corkysgirl » Sun Jun 29, 2014 6:19 am

My favorite Zebra finch "Little Fawn" died tonight at the age of 10 years, 4 1/2 months. Her brother, the same age is still alive. I am very sad! She was funny, the matriarch of all my other birds, worried when they were upset and something was wrong in the bird room. She would not get in her nest at the end of the day until every other bird got settled into theirs. This picture of the nest filled with eggs...she laid them all, many days in a row. I guess she was serious about being a mamma. She never was, unless you count the two chicks she fostered that were tossed by their parents. She raised and nurtured them. I'm really going to miss her! Ten years is a long time! :(

I'm really sorry. That must be hard on you. But you have to think, how amazing is it that she lived that long!!!!!!!! Most finches aren't lucky like that. You took great care of her. :) :)

Oh, that's so sad. I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had a very good life and it is obvious you loved her very much. And wow, that is a lot of eggs in that basket!

Thanks delray! It's not the same without her. I'm so sad because it didn't need to happen. She aspirated from the medicine I had to give her from the Vet. The thing he gave me to give her meds with was just too big and...... Well there's nothing I can do about it, but knowing I had a part in it, vs. just finding her makes all the more hard. I'm happy we had a good day yesterday. She was funny at the Vet! Good memories!
@KarenB, I counted at least 35 eggs because there were some underneath. The eggs were really thick too. I've had many finches over the years and never had one lay eggs this thick. They were 3-4 times thicker than the normal finch egg. It was really unique! She never got egg bound or even a hint of it. Her brother's looking for her frantically! It's so sad!

Don't beat your self up, it's not like you were trying to hurt her, she was older so it was harder for her to overcome it. Hope you feel better soon. :) :)

So sorry for your loss, ten years is a long time for a finch. She had a good life with you.

I'm so sorry, Corey.
She was such a pretty girl.

I know how you feel. It's so hard to lose one of your feathered or furry babies. I know Little Fawn had some special needs and that always makes it more difficult because in my experience, you tend to form a special bond with the animals who are unwell.

It's so sad about her brother looking for her. That sort of thing breaks. my. heart. I always try to show them when someone dies; sometimes they understand. Other times, they don't.

Fly free, Little Fawn.

Thank you MiaCarter. She was much prettier in her prime! But to me she was a sweetheart! I showed him. He was just confused about it. I'm happy he's a little senile...now. I think his young bride is missing her more than he is. She's free of any pain now, that's for sure and a great comfort!

So sorry for your loss. She had ten good years with you that might not have been with someone else. We love our birds, but to lose them is heatbreaking.

Thank you wildbird. I didn't think of it that way. I really did try to take good care of her.
