Chronic eye cold...pulling my hair out...now bald! Help!

Post by Corkysgirl » Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:11 pm

My 10 year old female zebra has had a chronic eye cold. I've been in touch with Laraine and Joanne...haha thinking they were the same person, over the last couple years on and off dealing with it. I've treated it with Colloidal silver drops, Gentamycin drops from the Avian Vet, Amoxitex, Colloidal silver again, Doxycycline...which didn't work after 7 days so I stopped (not being told I needed to use Megamix at the same time so I didn't), Amoxitex again. Now she's been on Doxycycline/Megamix for about 11 days and it's improving a little but she keeps itching it and ripping it open. I bleach her perch where she scratches. I add honey to the mix, per Laraine so she will drink it. Her eye just "maintains" and doesn't really heal completely. Now...as I am writing this, Laraine just wrote to me and said I could put an eye patch/or an Elizabethan collar on her (though she doesn't like them for animals normally). This has been ongoing for about 2 1/2 years. Does anyone have any ideas and/or know how to make an eye patch/collar. I put really raw honey on it hole she ripped out of desperation last night as it was bleeding. It's a little better from that. I need help because she is miserable and I don't want to lose her from an open infection. [-o<

http://familycrafts.about.com/od/pirate ... ePatch.htm

This is for humans, but you can try to make a small version for your bird.

That is for how to make the collar.

That is for buying a collar.

And if you want another way to create the collar with written and more clear directions, go here.

Hope I helped! :D

ShadowsCrest, Thank you for all those links. I know others who could use them. Because I didn't know how to do that I ended up using the small round band aids, cutting off one end...that end placed closest to her eye so I could still peak in and see if it got worse but she couldn't rub it. I took her to the Avian vet on Friday and she died on Saturday, really because they gave me an implement that was too big to give her the meds with and it aspirated her. There was no way to do it without her beak wide opened, and I couldn't regulate it's flow...at all! I didn't have a crop needle any more. I could have waited three days, to get one in the mail, should have but she started improving from one dose and I was afraid she'd become resistant to the meds. There's nothing I could do about it now...and I'm very upset. I questioned it and was assured it was fine...but speaking to multiple, knowledgeable people, the Vet definitely could have gone another route. It's a long story. Believe me, this is the short version. Someone was looking for how to do the collar the other day and I will suggest this if ever I see another in need. Thanks for your help!

I am so sorry to hear your loss ;-; I hope she rests in peace.

On the bright side, at least I helped ^^

You could also go get another bird. I would recommend getting a ringneck dove instead of parrots. They are so easy to take care of, VERY sweet and loving, and super tamable. I had gotten two and they were one of the the best things in my life. You should rather get a young one rather than an older one to make it more attached to you, but that's up to you.

If you want a dove, go here.

(The first link is better in my opinion)

Good luck! ^^
