New Society

I adopted two male Societies from a lady who couldn't care them any longer so they are bonded. I've had them for about 2 months. I recently purchased another male and now have put them together. The first two sleep together and the new one sleeps on top of the nest. Will they eventually sleep together? Or should I get another one?

I've heard that when there is a 3rd bird, one can become the third wheel. Maybe another society would be good, or he will just learn to get along with all of them, good luck! Societies are awesome finches to have.

Yeah...odd #'s isn't a great idea in finches. Sometimes you will get lucky and there won't be an odd man out...but there usually is. Just be sure to quarantine any new birds before adding them to your existing flock

I have three male Societies. The first two were together before we added the third. The first day they all hopped around together and the old birds sang to the new one. They seemed excited. The new guy slept outside of the nest that night though. The next day the new guy began singing and the old ones seemed very annoyed by it! They jumped at him each time he started to sing like, "No! Stop that!" At some point during that second day they accepted the new guy and his maleness. They allowed him to sing and he slept in the nest from that night on. They've all been "besties" ever since.

I think it just took them a little time to get over their disappointment that he wasn't a female.

Prism Wondering if I should take the nest out for a few days and then put a new one in?

It's true that the number three seldom works but there is always the exception to the rule. I love when that happens and there is harmony! Right now I'm dealing with zebra sibling juveniles that loved each other dearly...all sleeping inside the nest together or all in a row on top of the nest at night. Now the male is the odd man out and the 2 females are attacking him. It's so sad because they were so close before.

I'd wait and see what happens.

If he's the odd man out consistently, I'd get him a friend. But you never know; they may all bond as a trio.

I'm not surprised he's sleeping alone. Would you want to hop in to sleep with 2 people you've just met?
Not me. That would be awkward. LOL

I would take out the existing nest and clean it out and put it in a new spot. Rearrange the perches too. That redraws property lines and gives new guy a chance to get in on some "our" property, rather than a mine/yours situation where it's him vs the pair.

MiaCarter Ok so I took the nest out and waited until bedtime and put up a new one in a different spot. The two older ones kept looking for the nest.

I went in to check on them and the newbie was sitting on top of the new nest and the other two were crying for their nest. So I "caved" and put the old nest back in the old spot. The two jumped right in and newbie went up to the nest opening and jumped in also and they all sleep peacefully...Amen

Seems they were so happy to have their nest back that they didn't mind a newcomer! That's great news!
