Corkysgirl, Got my Rescue Remedy yesterday and gave them their first dose last night. Should I alternate that with the Thrive?

@MiaCarter, looks like the owl egg that the societies were fostering is DIS, but on a brighter note, we have....shock shock.....three society eggs at the moment. I candled those, as well, and they look vital, maybe only three-ish days old. I removed all the dud owl eggs taking up space to give them more space for their own. So, maybe we will have some babies fairly soon. It will be nice to watch the societies raise their babies. I am really surprised with how much I like them.

KarenB -- Aw, that's sad about the Owl egg, but great about the society eggs! When are they due to hatch?

I've got 5 myself (4 viable, 1 unsure) from Molly Sue and Ivy and I'm just starting to get excited! My first one was on 4-3, so I'm thinking I should have a baby in about a week. Sound like you're going to have little squeeps at about the same time!

I love societies. They're a bit plain and "common" but their sweet, happy personalities more than make up for any "commonness"!!

On the Rescue Remedy....
I'd give it with the Thrive, since there's not any real overlap in ingredients.
I think she'll enjoy all the help she can get!

How is her splint holding up? Is she leaving it alone and keeping it clean?
Humum to....

1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels

Yes KarenB you can give it with the Thrive. There's no contraindication to any medication.
That's great news about the society eggs KarenB! I love new babies! I can't wait to hear yours and Mia's new chick news! My old man, and new bride had five eggs they were sitting on but again deserted them. It's so sad. She is just so traumatized by my Little Fawn's death, keeps hopping up and down, looking for her still, mucking up the mood in the cage, upsetting the old man so they stopped sitting. So I added a brand new nest in hopes to change the dynamics. They're both laying in there after fixing it up. I'm praying this distracts from her being gone. [-o<

MiaCarter, The nearest guess for the first egg laid would be early this week (Sunday, Monday), but I really have no idea. I only decided to check on them yesterday (Thursday) out of curiosity about the owl egg since it should have hatched by now.......SO I would think in another ten more days-ish we should be hatching something. I'm curious to see what colors I'm going to get.

@Corkysgirl, That's really sad about the abandoned eggs. I have RCCBs that toss babies, so I feel your pain. They actually have at least one baby in their nest right now that I saw the shadow of through the nest with a flashlight  I keep expecting to see it dead on the bottom of the flight any minute. Prayers that it survives, but I'm not holding my breath. I also think my parrotfinch pair have something brewing, but I haven't looked in their nest. It seems like if they have anything viable, it would have hatched by now. The hen may be sitting on duds.

Oh I hope your RCCB chick makes it KarenB! Maybe this time they won't toss it! [-o< hopefully you'll get some parrot finches also. I don't have any others sitting at the moment. I think it's a first! This same pair deserted...I think it was 7 eggs, a few days after LF died, laid 5 more and deserted again. I just want them to get over the trauma. I think the new nest is helping a lot today. =D>

MiaCarter, as for the owl hen, Annie, she is doing pretty well, I think. After I re-did the wrap on her leg the other day, I put a large piece of straw over the end of the wrap to keep it from coming loose. Seems to be working rather well, and it helps to keep stuff off. She has been trying to use the leg to balance herself when perched. She is still staying mostly under the lamp and only flew up to the perch when I came up to the cage with the camera.

Corkysgirl, I think that was a good idea, distracting them with a new nest. It will give them a new focus. Kind of like working with children, huh?

KarenB -- What a perfect name. Annie. Love it! She looks like an Annie. My Annie is a big ginger long haired cat! LOL
What's the boy's name?

I think that's a very tidy looking splint. I love the idea with the straw as a covering. I'd never thought of that. Most gook will just slide off, keeping the bandage beneath nice and clean. Genius!

That's great that she's trying to use it a bit. That means it's not too painful.
That's what often seems to happen after bad bird leg breaks - it becomes a "helper" leg, even once the splint comes off. They're often stiff and still painful for a few months after the break heals, it seems.

@Corkysgirl --- Aw, I'm sorry to hear they abandoned the second clutch. I knew about the first one, but not the second. What a bummer. I agree with Karen, I think that was a wonderful idea to give them a new nest as a distractor!

Beginning yesterday Annie stopped staying under the heat lamp, opting to perch with Hoot on the low perch. I guess that is a good sign. Her wrap still looks good. She is trying to use the leg to perch with and it helps her balance. I am giving the Thrive and Rescue Remedy daily. I think she is acting more calm now, but that's relative as she still freaks some when I put my hand in the cage to change bowls. I have been giving millet, soaked/sprouted seed, egg food and greens, as well as their regular seed mix. They seem to ignore the soft foods or they are not eating much. I've seen Annie eating the mineral mix I have in there, but she ignores the cuttle bone. All in all, I think she is doing much better. I cannot wait to take off that cumbersome wrap.

KarenB I love their names! I'm happy she's doing better. The "acting more calm now" could be from the Rescue Remedy. It really is what it does. It won't affect her fight or flight mode but will definitely chill her out. She really looks great! :D
The nest is definitely helping distract them. The young bride still goes to the end of the perch where she can still see her cage...tilts her head like a dog does, one way, and then the other, and listens to hear for the girl that died. Over two weeks later. I'm so amazed at that! She isn't doing it often now, but just that she remembers is amazing to me.

Sad news. I noticed the wire was not right on the splint, so I removed everything. It looks like the wire had punctured the upper part of the leg. It didn't bleed much, but I think the foot is dead. The joint is a bit swollen, too. I just left the wrap off. She is using the heel to balance with. I feel sick. I wish I hadn't attempted to wrap it now. She probably would have kept the foot at least.
