There expensive enough over here, normaly about 80-95 euros per pair which would be about same price as gouldians and it's very difficult to get guarranteed young birds or nice pieds, most dealers will always say the're about 18 months old when in fact they could be 4+years as it's very rare for them to be closed rung, this is why it's taken me so long to get them breeding as i think 1 possibly 2 of the males i bought are too old.

I'm not sure how much they are were you are ?

Smurf A normal pair of red heads goes for R500 - 34 euros.
Pieds go for R600 a pair - 41 euros.

I buy from people that I trust. The oldest parrot finch that I bought is a year old.

People tend to hold on to their heavy pieds.

Congrats! Pity about the one, but considering it is the middle of winter...

Wow yours have come out showing more colour than usual. You have expanded your collection. Enjoy it.
If you are going to shuffle mates etc its still early days in the pairings so you can.

monotwine I considered putting a door onto the enclosed area, and do like you do, but was too lazy. we had a very fine mist rain on sunday and it was colder overnight. The little one probably didn't sleep with the parents because the crop was empty. As soon as the parents stop feeding the little ones, I will have to board the male somewhere to break the bond.

MariusStegmann, that's cheap, i had to pay 45 and 60 euros for single heavy pied cocks without knowing their age because i couldn't get them anywhere else but they are both fabulous pieds, the first one at 45 is part of my best breeding pair having produced 12 chicks so far this year, the one i paid 60 for is supposed to be split for lutino but has only produced 1 what looks like a normal chick so far from 3 clutches, i'm hoping he was just out of condition when i got him as the chick was from the last clutch, hopefully he'll do better next clutch (i'd be over the moon if i even had 1 lutino chick from him )

I wish i knew trusted breeders like you as i've yet to meet someone who breeds parrot finches over here

MariusStegmann, there is a lutino and a black eyed yellow blue faced parrot finch which are both reasonably easy to get, this is what mine is supposed to be split for, scroll down towards bottom of page on link

Smurf It looks like you have to be a member to view those pages. It says I don't have permission to view these pages.

Smurf
The guy that I got my first pied Red head on saturday has something symilar. His one has a bright orange head instead of the reddish head of the one that you referred me to. He has it in a smaller cage because he is bonding it to a new female.
