New Breeding/Holding Cages

Hello Everyone

Attached a Photo of the 6 New Cages i brought off Ebay a couple months ago. Im am pretty happy with them so far, came with perches, food containers and pull out trays, proberly the best thing i like with these cages are the ablity to fold flat. making for good storage when not in use.

I will be placing natural branches in the cages.

They are alittle on the small size 61 long, 41 wide and 41 high.

I will most likely use them for holding birds on occasions, but mainly for bonding Gouldian Pairs, then releasing them back into the aviaries.

I will place 1 pair in a cage to breed for the 09 season to see how it goes. il attach the breeding box on the outside.

attached is a pic of one of my new cages setup. it houses my First Pet Budgie.

this pic shows where i can attach the bath for the goulds and i will be wanting to put these types of seed hoppers on the cages.

This picture below is of the 2 types of Water Containers i am considering.
I like the green one on the left because it can be hung outside, leaving more room for the birds, but i also like the one inside the cage, it can hold 600 ml of water, and id never have to worry about it falling off the cage if i was away for a day or 2

Sensible cages, though I still prefer the European type box cage for privacy.
One thing....Why do the manufacturers insist on supplying perches fitted lengthwise???...Have these people ever kept birds??

Using natural branches for perches....very sensible.

nice cages, a good purchase.
you may find though that you will need to cover the ends & maybe the top of the cages so that the inhabitants of one cage cannot see their neighbours. could help them to bond quicker

Those cages look good.

I also got some of my breeding cages on eBay (probably same seller) but a size bigger. To ensure privacy, economically, I just tape or paperclip newspaper to the sides/ends so no one is distracted by their neighbour. Works great!! I got rid of the dowel perches that come with the cages and brought in branches from my backyard.

Oh and I also place newspaper on the floor inside each cage to cover those grill floors.

Got this idea from an Australian Budgie Forum.

I may do this with my cages to allow the Privicy, its an option anyway.
Do you recommed the paper on the grill floors?? Does the Grate hurt the birds feet????? at the moment i have the paper under the grate sitting in the tray.

That 'cupboard' would work too - just saying newspaper is a little more economical and works for me.

The grates don't hurt the birds feet but there's a chance they can get a foot caught in them - that's not a good thing!

Those are nice setups. i was thinking about getting a few of these cages for the finches to allow more privacy and to seperate babies when they were old enough to be on there own, but so far everyone is okay in the new aviary and i have an extra flight cage that i had them in before.

I have been wondering that same thing for years.
I seriously doubt it since they continue to make and produce those house shaped and round cages or too small cages with goodies and call it a cockatiel starter kit and the cage is not even big enough for 2 finches or a budgie.

I really wish they would stop producing things that are Not good for birds.
Then again I also wish folks would read up and know better then to buy them too.

I do love the cages. I just got a great deal myself for some cages like those for my canaries.

I've the exact same cage for my pair of gouldians. I bet you paid alot less for yours though. Mine was R350 (+- US$35).

I like your idea of putting that shielding around the bottom, my goulds have been making a huge mess, splattering seed all over the lounge. I assume thats why you placed it there.

I have the same cage but they are the 30 inchers instead of the 24 like these. I am assuming you put your measurements in cm, right? Anyway, here is the cabinet my husband built for me for them:

I like it this way as it makes them like the European box cages and hardly cost us a thing. He hung full spectrum lights over each cage. I also use the seed hoppers which are great! The dowels that came with are ridiculous like poohbear said being lengthwise. I buy the manazita perches for all my cages and aviaries. Love those things!! I use these cages to breed individual pairs and keep the rest of the birds in my aviary.

Yes, we use cm here in SA. When ever someone talks in inches It takes some serious mental calculations

cm=(inch * 2.5). I'll have to measure but I think mine is the 24in version.

I went home to tell the wife the idea to stop the flying seeds and she had already wrapped the bottom of the cage in shade cloth...problem solved.

Nice cabinet! Im gonna be building a breeding cage for outdoors soon.

I cheated! I use the google feature of converting measurements. There is no way I could figure it out on my own without serious mental calculations like you said.

Been metric here for years...makes sense, so much easier to calculate than the ridiculous feet and inches.It's just that us older ones still think in the old measurements.

Yes, I still think in feet and inches. Just can't grasp cm & mm in my mind... yet I seem to have stopped trying to translate Centigrade back to Farenheit (sp?) in my mind to decide if it's hot or cold out. Wonder why I could learn that, but not the centimeters thing....
