Bird Bread

I have the recipe, I have the ingredients, and I am going to make my bread (and hopefully get the little buggers to eat their veggies!) but I just thought of a dumb question.

For those of you who feed bird bread,do you just put the square as a solid piece or crumbled? Do you put it on a plate in the bottom of the cage, or do you put in in the bowl near their regular food? Do you mix it with their regular seed diet?

It feel dumb asking this but, it just seems to simple to put it as a solid square, though that would be the prefered way...I thought about trying it both ways and just see how they like it. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I usually crumble the cube of bird bread for my finches and put it on a plate on the bottom of the cage and I have also put it in a cup up higher....seems to work fine both ways. They will find it where ever you put it!

My Senegal gets the whole cube...he has a bigger beak so he likes to tear it up himself.

Good luck...hope they will enjoy the bread and the hidden veggies!

I just tried that birdie bread, and my GB babies have been seen sampling it, but Mom and Dad haven't tried it yet, at least not that I've seen.

I broke a cube in half and put it on the bottom of the cage. When I put eggfood or any treats in the treat feeder up higher, Mom literally tosses it all out with her beak, then goes down to the 'ground' to eat it!

So I figured they prefer to forage on the cage bottom.

Can't tell if they are getting any of the green veggies I hid in the bread, as they don't eat much of it. Too many choices in the cage for them I guess... By the way, I found some red millet at a local pet store and my GBs just LOVE it! They prefer it way more than the regular yellow millet! It's hard to find..only one pet store carries it here, and it's more money...

Yeah, they are. My sister was shocked to actually catch me in the kitchen baking bread for the birds while I'd never be caught dead in there cooking for myself!

Well baking the bread was a pretty fun, a couple of my friends and I got together, and let me tell ya, that mix looks DISGUSTING! But, it smells great when cooked and looks good too. BUT the birds won't go anywhere near it

I will try it again here shortly, I have done in the treat bowl and in the food bowl, my next try will be crumbled on a plate in the bottom of the cage...if that doesnt work I guess I will give half of the bread to a friend who has a love bird that eats just about anything.

Worth a try, and a great bonding experience for me and a couple crazy friends!

Sometime you have to try several times before they will eat new foods.don't give up to soon on them

I have found also the presentation is everything with some birds. It took a while for my finches to try it too. I put some on a plate on the floor.... and some in a cup higher up.

Some I crumbled and some I made very fine almost like dust...they went first for the finer crumbs and I gradually added some bigger pieces in there too. Or put just a little bit of their favorite seeds or egg shell on top to entice them.

Morning is usually the best time to try something new when they are really hungry...that might work for you too and maybe remove the other foods for awhile.

Finches are very particular about food presentation....you just have to find the right method. When I had Zebras...they were the first to try anything...then when everybody else saw that they were eating they soon followed. Monkey see.....Monkey do....lol!

Don't give up the ship...keep trying! And try tasting a little of the birdie bread....I did...and I am still normal.

So true about the presentation...I tried giving them a nice "thanksgiving" meal (all sorts of different fruits and veggies). I finely chopped them and put them on a plate in the bottom of the cage, I seperated them by type so I would know if they ate any of them...notta...I am going to invest in a food prossessor this weekend I think...see if even smaller powdery pieces will do the trick!

I won't give up, they will eat something other than seed one day!
