I ordered it!

Post by Harley2013 » Fri Aug 08, 2014 9:39 pm

Well, I jumped, ( again) and ordered the Prevue F040. It should be here this week. I want to shop for some silk plants to hang inside, maybe hit the dollar store, and make it sort of tropical/ comfortable for them to adjust to. I'm thinking the The pair of lady gouldins I have now, a pair of zebras and possibly a pair of ( not sure) and that will be complete. I am hoping that this cage is easy enough to move around that I can still roll them outside occasionally for some sun, or if I also have the idea of a full-spectrum light on them during the day. I can't wait to fix it all up! Now I have 2 extra cages I don't know what to do with. Lol! I keep jumping into new cages! So into storage it goes......

Congrats, I think you will really like that cage. It never hurts to have extra cages, just in case you have to separate birds because of compatibility issues, or if you have a sick bird. Or do like the rest of us, who can't resist filling an empty cage with still more birds!

We have this cage for our lineolated parakeets, and they love it. They use the WHOLE thing, top to bottom.

It was somewhat of a pain to put together, and you have to bend/unbend some pieces, but all in all, well worth the money. It's easy to clean, too. The doors on ours can be hard to open. Well, the bottom door opens easy, but the top one is a bit stiff. I had to bend things a bit to get it to work better.

But wait.....empty cages mean you need more birds......

Thats a great cage. I love mine. I have two pair of goulds in mine. IMO three pair would be a bit of a crowd. My birds use the bottom half very little. Because of that I am going to sell it after my youngsters ween in favor of the F070/F075 combo. That will provide space for more birds on the same footprint.

To be honest, I have two of them and don't like them at all. The doors are too big for finches and I always have to put my body in front of the door. My birds only use the bottom half when they are stressed and trying to get away from me. I'd sell mine for scrap except my zebs live in there, the ones who love to eat me out of house and home.

When you put it together, make sure you are very good at putting things together or get some one to help you do it.

Not to be a downer, hope you love it but I wouldn't use it as a breeder unless you only are planning to house no more then one pair in there.

saulosirds to remedy the situation with the large door and birds escaping, I use their cage cover which is a heavy tight weaved material (toe nails can't get caught in it) and drape it over the top of the cage down over the door, leaving only enough room for your arm to get in to catch the bird, or to put your arm in to do whatever it is you're doing. This prevents escapes and you can comfortably work in the cage or catch a bird without worry. I learned this after many escape and captures.

Woo-Hoo! I know you & your birds will enjoy it. The Dollar Store is great for fake plants.

I am not planning on breeding. I was lucky enough to have my husband agree to this idea. Lol! He knows me though..... I would've done it anyway. As far as being crowded, it equals out to be roughly 11 square feet of room inside, so after I get them set up, and add a couple of zebras, I will see if that is enough or if there is room for more. I do think in a cage this size, 4 definitely will be okay, zebras are smaller than the Gouldins and they should have enough of their own space. Maybe one day for more birds in my other cages..... My ultimate goal is to have a yard where one day I can house them all outside, but living in New Jersey although possible, it seems a bit ke a pain. I would love to move back to California and do this. :)

Now I'm second guessing myself.......maybe I'm better off with a double flight? I do want to put more birds in and if they will only use the top portion of the cage it may not work the way I was hoping. Any advise?

I have two 040 & the rest are 030. I converted all of them to up & down apartments; and hang bead strings in the doors which make a nice barrier (& colorful) :D

Here are the apartments. Beads strings in the door. I'll be on vacation for a week, so if you have any questions I won't be able to answer them right away. Do a search for "apartments" on this forum & you'll find lots of answers.

saulosirds I found the same problem. I was going to sell mine, and then I decided to disassemble it and make a different cage with the parts. If only I had two of them, like you, it would have been a lot easier to combine all the parts and make a double wide version. Then the birds would mostly fly to the other areas of the cage whenever I open one of the doors. As it is, having only one, I am using wood to build the parts that I am lacking for making it a double wide. The whole back will be plywood, and a whole new floor needed to be built.

@Corkysgirl I used to use cloth as well, to block the opening, and that wouldn't be so bad if I only had a few birds and just one or two cages to service. But with a large flock, the slight inconvenience just slows me down too much.

Hanging beads seems like it would work better than cloth. My aunt had a doorway in her apartment like that in the 70s! :)

I use clear plastic sheeting like for transparencies for my doors. That way I can still see through it, and the birds cannot get past it if I leave the door open.
