From The Finch Information Centers page
http://www.finchinfo.com/breeding/handfeeding.php
...pay attention to the color of the chick's feces. They should be yellow-brown in color. If the chick begins producing green feces, this is a sign that the crop has stopped emptying properly. Crop stasis (crop "slow down," or decreased crop emptying) may be a sign of infection. Other common causes of crop stasis are over feeding, feeding cold formula, and improper brooder temperatures...Check the temperature of the brooder and the formula you have been feeding. Make any necessary adjustments and pay close attention to the time intervals between feedings. If the crop is still emptying too slowly, suspect infection and act immediately: mix equal parts of hand feeding formula and infant applesauce. Provide this mixture for all feedings during the next 24 hours and then slowly return to the normal concentration of formula over another 24 hour period. The infant applesauce lowers the pH of the crop and aims to rid it of any infection.

all gone :(

the last one died with a full crop so it must have been a slow crop. I tried infant applesauce (was more like juice) and proper temp but was too late :(

I don't know re poo color as am color blind.

Thanks a lot all - you have been very helpful as this was my first ever feeding so tiny chicks.

So very sorry for your losses
Know you did your best, handfeeding is VERY difficult even for seasoned breeders.

Thanks for the encouragement Debbie. This will be a learning experience as I can already identify many things that I did wrong.

1) I am sure there were times when the formula was not hot enough.
2) I go the applesauce too late.

Sorry to hear about your babies. I think they were simply too young.
