afinch be sure to spread them out. Plants that are too close together will steal nutrition from eachother, leading to smaller millet. It took 6 weeks for my millet from planting. but its well worth it. Each millet has over 1000 seeds and the success rate for the seeds are high.

Yes saulosirds you can grow indoors but its a little more work and money. Depending on where you live, the plants needs warmth and artificial lighting. You will have to also have a timer so they get the same amount of light as outside.

Bermyguy

I have yet to find an article that talks of the benefits of green millet but I do know that all the Brits I know who have the best success with their waxbills will swear to it!!

I am so glad you posted this! I have been thinking of growing some grasses for green seed so I will have to try this. BTW - chickweed - is supper easy to grow - you probably have it in your lawn and garden already. I 'weeded' it out on a cooler day and planted it in some soil where it would get part sun. I watered it once or twice and left it to fend for itself. It has grown wonderfully. And although I have not tried it, it is also supposed to be really healthy for people too.

Oh wow Derk I will have to try that as well. The millet is very easy you just have to make sure it stays watered depending on what kind you have. Some millets have very shallow roots which will dry out quickly. Its a fun thing to do though :)

Justino22 - I'll do a little research before planting, especially since it is mid-August already. Where did the summer go? We generally have a mild climate but these days you never know for sure. I am hoping to finds things I can grow all year. I will share what I find and successes and failures. This year I planted raspberries, two fig trees, kiwi and I have a small pomegranate tree/bush that should survive with some care. I already had two small grape vines, wild blackberries, and some blueberries. I must admit I benefit from it more than the birds. But I do share and I promise not to eat their grass seed. I have also been researching winter vegs to grow. I don't mean to steal your thread...just excited. Wondering if there is/should be a garden thread we could all add to with maybe a 'sticky' with what to try??

Forgot to mention chickweed can be grown indoors. Easy to find if you Google. I have not tried as I just started with chickweed this spring. If it is a mild year, I will be able to keep growing it outside. If I find the time, I might create a cold frame for it. No one warned me taking birds would be so much work!

Yea, it is work. Same as a dog or any other animal. They are great though. Each one has its own personality.
