Well,
Sad afternoon. I went down to check on the hatchling, which I put back in the nest twice already. He was in the seed dish AGAIN!

This time, he was cold and died.

As I think about it, I don't think my Society's tossed him, but I think the young Forbes tossed him. I think the Forbes was jealous and saw the baby as taking over his nest. He often looked at the nest or tried to sit on the edge when the Society's were incubating. I guess if another egg hatches, I need to move this guy for the babies' protection. Oh well,...

finchmix22 Oh, no, I'm so sorry you lost him. How many eggs total are there, or how many babies?

Two more chances! I'd be tempted to move the Forbes out.

Sorry for little baby. How on earth did he end up in the seed dish every time ? Sorry but I get confused easily, are these Society eggs?

This is my pair of Society males who raised the other Forbes baby to weaning. I think the Forbes, now a juvenile, is jealous and threw the baby out because these two boys have always been such good parents and very protective of the eggs and babies. The little Forbes was looking into the nest and you could see he wanted to go inside, but Mozart was guarding the eggs and baby. I assume, the Forbes got close enough so Mozart left or he went on into the nest and tossed the baby. After I put the baby back the third time, he must've tossed it immediately because I went back to check about 45 minutes later for supplemental feeding and he was already cold and dead. Ugh. I hate it when these little ones don't make it and are tossed!

So so sad, especially when you had fed him and kept puting him back.

Here they are with the oldest one now a week old and the youngest at two days old. Is it my imagination, or do a couple of those critters have brown splotches on their heads? I don't remember Beans having any of that. I'm wondering if there is chocolate in this box.

I took a series tonight while the chicks were begging to see their gape. This is not the best of them. because it's not the one I meant to put on photobucket. However, it looks to me like some of these babies have markings in their mouths, whereas Beans' was always just pink inside. If my theory is right, I believe some of these might have some chocolate in them.

Good question! Any combination of fawn and chocolate pied. I have one of each in each sex, and they all share.

The above photo was taken when they were raising Beans. They all shared parental nesting duties then. Funny, this time around, with six babies, only one sits at a time, and the other three, plus Beans, pack into one of the other wicker nests. I think they instinctively know that they may possibly squish the babies or knock them out so they leave the sitting to just one of themselves at a time.
Beans is a fawn pied, BTW, sex unknown. "He" is only 7 weeks old. I suspect his parents were the male fawn pied (BamBam) and the female chocolate pied (Cocoa). But I don't really know. Tonight Pebbles (fawn pied female) is sitting and Beans and the other three parents are packed into an adjacent wicker nest.

We seem to be having almost coinciding clutches! My seven societies just raised six chicks to weaning a few weeks back and now have between them 10 new eggs about a few days from hatching.
Funny your birds don't all incubate together anymore! My birds have split off into two breeding groups who each have gone and nested in two different cages. One consists of a male and 2 hens, and then one of the grown young from last time, and then the other consists of one male, one female, their two grown offspring born in January, and the other 8 week old baby whom I kept from last time. But in each nest, all of the birds sit in the nests/sleep in them at once! The eggs aren't getting broken, so they must just be careful. It's so cute when the little 8 week olds take turns sitting on the eggs to give their parents and older siblings a break!'
I also have a society named Apollo by the way! He was part of my first ever clutch last winter and is 8 months old now.
