ZEBBY FLYZONE COMPLETE and WALL TO WALL Carpets!

Post by CHIRP » Fri Sep 12, 2014 9:53 am

I managed to put completion to my new "tiny cage" for my ZEB FAMILY today, been distracted with so much stuff lately, anyway, I am now completely finished, the castors clip on the bottom when the birds are transferred.

Made it wall to wall carpets with finished edges, large bath, and corner resting spots, I notice Zebs like corners.

Anyway, now I can brag a little

It is a good feeling knowing you did it all. The carpet slides in a thin slit under the cage, and the cages comes apart in 6 pieces.

Lovely and lots of work.
Quick question, how on earth do you get burd pee and poop out of the carpet?

ummmmmm dunnoooooo  No, actually it is ok, I use a hard brush that I also use to clean out the outside birdbath, so I got another one for the Zebs, I brush the pooooop away easily.

I used a strong fibre carpet BECAUSE Mr Zeb loves nest building and will peck at any piece of fabric he sees, HE DONT stand a chance with this carpet =D>

Beautiful.

Is that Chicken wire? Spacing looks like it. Finches can slip righ through that. Sparrows (which are way bigger than my finches) are always hopping right through the chicken wire on our outdoor run to help our chickens eat their scratch. Are you sure you won't lose birds through that wire?

The wire is 12mm wide at its widest part, just under half an inch. I think the photographic image seems bigger.

It does look bigger. Looks like regular chicken wire. Did not know it came in smaller sizes. I might look into that for some projects here.

See Mechanical on the perch he is about 2 inches in front of the wire, and the other pic, the mesh is just under half an inch wide. If you cant buy it I can always mail it to you ( the mesh not the Zebs  )

The mesh is South African RAND ZAR is R30,00 a METRE. So, with currency now of about R11,00 to a Dollar you must work that out, so a metre will cost you about $3-00. The mesh is 90 cm wide. Hope my bad mathematics is right

CHIRP Very nicely made. Check that your bird's nails don't get stuck in the carpet. Also the netboxes, I would not put so close to the roof. Summer is coming and when the temp hits 35 Celsius and above and parent birds and babies can get cooked inside nests. I prefer nestboxes a bit lower that bit of a breeze can come between the nest and the roof. It is great for winter if you have a roof like a dome, but not in summer. The hot airs gets trapped there.

Thanks - all input taken and respected. This cage wont be in direct sunlight on hot days, they will be in the shade. I will watch the carpet story and check the nails. If it does I can turn the carpet over 8)

Very very nice!!! It's so rewarding doing the work yourself. You appreciate it so much more afterwards :D

Lori, this smaller chicken mesh is perfect for waxbills and smaller finches. The bigger hookbill's would bite right through it though. It's relatively easy to work with and it's much cheaper than galvanised mesh. We always have a role of it around. It's quite amazing how often it comes in useful!

YOu did a lot of work and it looks cool. One question, what about protecting them from predators?

If finches are kept in an outdoor aviary/cage, then they are vulnerable to rats, mice, snakes, hawks, owls, and other vermin, so to speak. What do you have in place to keep away those critters that want to eat your finches and their eggs?
