Hi. I frequently juice fruits & veggies and have been wondering if I could feed the fruit & veggie pulp to my finches instead of throwing it away. Has anyone experimented with this? If yes, please share your experience.
Thanks

Re: Fruit & veggie pulp
I haven't tried it myself, as I have a vitamix instead of a juicer, so I get no pulp, but I visited with an experienced breeder one time who said he feeds the pulp left over from his juicing to his finches and said it was very good for them.

Sally, thanks for your comment. Fruit & veggie pulp sounds like a good idea, but I just don't want to take chances with my finches until I hear from others who have fed the pulp to their finches.

Re: Fruit & veggie pulp
After 2 weeks of putting out the fruit & veggie pulp for my birds, I can say definitely that it's a failed experiment. None of my birds (including zebras, gouldians, javas, and canaries) liked it. A few would nibble in the beginning but stayed away after a few tries.
I don't understand why they would eat the fruits & veggies, but not the pulp of those same fruits & veggies. Finicky birds!!!

I can only guess that they don't like the taste. I wouldn't like the pulp either, as you get a more bitter flavor from the pith. Maybe that is the problem for them too?

Deborah, you're probably right about the taste. It's too bad they don't like it. I hate to waste the pulp. Guess it will have to go into the compost bin.
