atarasi,

Your mention of the Quality Cage mart in Portland reminded me. I was wondering how active their website is and if they are still in business... as I sent them an email about a week ago, using the Contact link on their website.

I was asking about a quote on a cage, so I would have expected to here back from them... was a bit disappointed to say the least... It's not easy to do it by phone from work so thought email best. But apparently they don't check their website email very often!

atarasi,
Im doing my research on the finches now and there are several I am interested in.

I have 4 breeding cages on the way and hubby is going to KILL me when he sees them!
Im going to have to sweet talk him into letting me get more birds...and will have to wait til after the holidays when I have more money..

BUT...
Gouldians and Shaft-tails ARE on my list of wanna-haves!

I would be interested in pairs perhaps sometime in the spring.

Quality Cage is still in business as far as I know. Not sure how often they check their website. I would just call them.

I have non-related pairs of Gouldians, but all the Shaft-tails I have are just offspring from the same pair.

Of course just today they got back to me! News wasn't good though. It would cost $280 for the cage I wanted, and $289 to ship it! Thought I could save myself building a second cage for the babies next year. But at that price I can make the effort to build my own...
At least they finally got back to me instead of leaving me wondering...

Shipping to Canada is expensive. If you go to their bird marts, most of their cages are on sale.

It sure is! Wish I had a car! That's what I told them. I can't get there to pick one up at one of their bird marts, so I'll have to pass.

If you had a car - then would you go? How about renting a vehicle for a day or two?

Franny,
If I know what you're looking for, I could pick it up for you. I have friends who live in Abbotsford and we know Langley isn't that far from there. Come to think of it, I have a friend who's friend passed away recently. She had a lot of Quality Cages that he inherited that he needs to sell. What size are you looking for? All I know is that all the cages she had were white.

L in Ontario -I can't really afford to rent a car right now either.

Atarasi - Not sure what you mean by not far from Abbotsford. The Quality Cages are in Portland Oregon aren't they? At least that's who I contacted. Is there a distributor in Abbotsford? I could get there by bus, but couldn't get a cage home by bus. Would have to wait until I could arrange a ride or have the cab money.

If your friends in Abbotsford have a cage for sale at a good price, I could always paint it black. My concern was that I wanted one with 1/2 X 1/2 wire. That's why the quote was so high! I have GBs and was worried that their 1/2 X 1" might allow too much wiggle room for a nervous fledgling. But it would be fine for the adults. The model I was looking at had a divider (Poohbear would approve! :) ) and it was the BC-7 "large divided breeder cage" and was 36"w x 20"d x 20"h. It sold for $119.00 - the $280 cage was their quote for doing the same cage dimensions with the smaller opening wire.

Let me know when ever you get a chance, if they have something along that size. No big hurry. I don't plan to let them breed again 'til next spring.

Franny,
I was just saying that I could drive the cage from Portland to Abbotsford when I visit friends there. Quality Cage doesn't have a distributor in Canada. If I hear of a sale from Quality Cage, I'll check in with you and pick it up and get it to you. I don't think my friend has any cages with 1/2" x 1/2" wire. They are all 1/2" x 1" spacing.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. Very nice of you to offer! But I doubt they'd have any on sale at that size with the 1/2 X 1/2 as it's not a regular item. That's why I emailed regarding a special order... but the cage was too expensive, too, not just the shipping.

I can't say how much I appreciate the offer though, to bring one up here! I HATE not having a car, but I hate to put other people out, just because I feel I can't afford one. I think I will just have to buckle down and build another cage!

Making cages is pretty easy. The 1/2" x 1/2" wire is very common to find. You can purchase the plastic trays, food dish doors, J-clips and pliers from Quality Cage or from most poultry/seed stores.
For every cage you sell, it could include a free pair of Goldbreasted waxbills!

Great idea. But those cages would have to sell for a bundle for it to be worth it for me! I live in a small apartment and don't have anything like a good work area to do any building... Had to work right in the middle of the livingroom, in front of the TV... my long suffering sister would be happier if I could just buy one I like  but they just don't make the really big cages with the smallest openings suitable for the waxbills. That's why I made mine in the first place. I'd like another "holding" cage for babies, but I just wanted to avoid the hassle of building another. Not to be, I guess.

Most of my breeding cages are from Quality Cage. I got a good deal on them used on craigslist. These are 34x18x18, with both a wire and solid divider. Wire spacing is 1/2x1. There are two slide out trays, with a wire grate that sits on the trays--I remove the wire grates. I only use the dividers when catching, etc., prefer to have the full 34" length. With the solid dividers, I can even check nests (sometimes) without parents seeing what I am up to.

I have Goldbreasts, Strawberries, and Fires in these cages, and have not had a problem with them escaping, even the fledglings. I do find that when the divider is not in, the gap where the divider goes is quite large on some of the cages, so I cut 1/2" quarter round molding to go in that space--the cages come with a spring to hold the dividers in place, so that works great to hold the molding in place.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.
