Hi and welcome to forum, there's plenty of useful information about the different species in the finch information center which should help you decide on which species to look for as the're are so many

http://www.finchinfo.com/index.php

If it will be your first finches i'd recommend society finches until you get a bit more experience

Welcome to the forum :) . Have you checked hoobly.com? There's usually finches for sale in NJ listed on there. What species are you looking for?

Welcome to the forum! Good luck with your search. Lady Gouldians are so beautiful, and I also love Stars, used to keep them. They are the most curious birds, and the male has a lovely soft song.

The lady Gs do a little mating dance holding a little stick i believe ? Do Stars also do this ? Any other finches that do the comical little dance holding a little stick ? Maybe Indian Sivlerbills ?

Most if not all finches do that little mating dance, though the Lady G's are more intense than some. It's how they attract the females, besides their color and song.

Goulds dance with or without a piece of nesting material. Males sing and dance and bounce up and down, and if hen likes it she bows her head and shakes it around.
