My female RCCB died. My male is alone now.
My female RCCB died suddenly today. I don't know what happened. I had only have her one year. She was fine until this afternoon.
I found her at the bottom of the caged puffed up and closing her eyes. I got her out, put her in a box with food and drink with a light next to it to keep her warm, but she did not make it. She died an hour later. Now my baby boy is alone and sad, calling for her and yelling at times like he is mad.
I am calling the finch farm tomorrow to see if I can have another deliver for next week. Hopefully they can still ship here to PA.
I just hate to see him alone. Is he going to be okay by himself for a few days?
Any suggestions
thank you

I'm sorry to hear your little girl didn't make it and unfortunately I don't have any advice for you. Best of luck!

The male will be okay. It is normal for him to go through this since he just lost his mate. I wouldn't put a new hen in with him right away, though. After you quarantine the new hen, place the two side by side in adjacent cages first to let them get acquainted with one another.
I had a parrot finch hen that died in a night fright incident suddenly, and my male sang and sang and called for her. This was over a month ago. It was truly heartbreaking at first. Then things calmed down and he quit calling and singing for a while. Just yesterday he started calling again. I am picking up a mate for him tomorrow, and I will let her sit in a cage next to his flight for a little while until they get acquainted. I'm curious to see how much he will call and sing for her. I just hope he likes her and vice versa

Re: Female red cheeked cordon bleu attacked by other finch!
Are you sure it was another finch that drew the blood? It wasn't too long ago that a fellow fincher here on the forum lost a bird because they had a cat that got to it through the cage bars. If you have a cat, you may want to take measures to see that the cat cannot get to those birds again. If you don't have a cat, just disregard my statement.

I am so very sorry for your loss. And I completely agree with Karen...I know how difficult it is to hear your male call for his mate, but it is important to quarantine his new hen beforehand. This will ensure they are both safe and give them time to adjust. Best of luck with the finch farm. Shirley is great to work with...I'm sure she can advise you on an appropriate quarantine procedure for your new hen.

Hi.
Going through the same thing with my Shaft Tail boy. His mate was severely injured by my cat through the bars of the flight. She as well did not survive. He is calling for her, especially come evening. He'll get on the highest perch and call, then stops to listen, then calls again, etc. It is heart breaking to watch and listen to. Right now however there aren't any females in my area, or anywhere in the vicinity.
I think after a period of time, it will become less and less as they forget. Does your boy have any company (other finches) with him at present? My boy is in with Zebras, and they don't allow him too much time to grieve, there is always some commotion going on.

I'm the person with the cat/finch story.
Never had any problems before, then suddenly my poor shaft tail girl was mangled almost beyond recognition. Sadly she didn't make it.
I hope your girl recovers. Might have to keep her away from mate, if indeed he is the culprit.

Re: My female RCCB died. My male is alone now.
Thank you everybody for your responses. I will have to get another cage to put the new one in when it comes in.
No, my boy has no other finches, he is alone. That is why I am so worried and I don't want to wait to long until I find him another one. Another reason is that is getting cold here in PA and don't want it to go into freezing temperatures before I have another hen shipped.
Karen B. I hope your does good with his new partner.

Re: Female red cheeked cordon bleu attacked by other finch!
I have had issues with both my RBBC male and my BCCB male. My RCCB male would become too aggressive with his hen, so they had to be separated. When I reunited them, he was good for a few hours only and then would become aggressive with her again (almost mated her to death
). My BCCB male had a male mate which he bullied into submission. He also went after my owl hen and put a hole in her beak...she was a bloody mess. Needless to say, neither of these males were housed with hens again.

Yes, I noticed that one too.
@carla
So sorry you lost your hen.
The male should be fine until you get another hen. Post a pic when she arrives.
