Losing my mind!!!!
I'm losing my mind!!!! Little Anduin fledged early and the begging noise he's made since he fledged is driving me absolutely BONKERS, I had NO idea a bird this small could be so loud! I can hear him outside of the house! His begging rivals the screams of our African Grey! And believe me that is saying something.
I am begging the universe for him to wean early.... because this is nuts!
He's well fed but begs a LOT.
I have heard other fledged finches beg and their noise level doesn't even begin to compare to his....
On a side note our African Grey seems to be quieter since this started, perhaps she's surprised another bird could be as loud as her especially one that she would gladly eat as a snack if we would let her.

I hope your African grey doesn't start making the same noise! He may be so quiet because he is trying to learn it.

Re: Losing my mind!!!!
My mum got Emily(the grey) before I was born, she HATES me.... only me, she's ok with other people even strangers(though a bit shy) but me? no way, she hates me, you see I suddenly appeared one day and I had colic pretty bad so I not only took away all the attention I was LOUD.
She's a great talker she knows over 500 words and phrases(though getting her to say them when you want is another issue) but if it were up to me she'd have a new home.... because she KNOWS what noises I can't stand and those are the ones she makes the most.
Her saying is- Anything you can do I can do LOUDER and sarcastically!
no really, Emily can make any noise sound sarcastic, she loves to try out tone of voice. Her favorite words to say while trying out tone of voice is "gird bird" which is something she made up, a mix of "good bird" but also "bird bird" much like "threeour" which is 3 and 4 put together(even though she knows the real numbers..... she can count to 10 to but she won't....)

Your Gray is probably quiet because he is studying the begging noise and figuring out how to duplicate it.On a side note our African Grey seems to be quieter since this started, perhaps she's surprised another bird could be as loud as her especially one that she would gladly eat as a snack if we would let her.

Re: Losing my mind!!!!
Ha ha ha. African greys are among my absolute favorites. They are SO smart.
But Oh. My. Goodness. If they don't like you, watch out! I've never had it happen to me personally but I've seen a few cases where they disliked a person in the household. They are so smart that they can observe (and understand what they're seeing) so well that they can identify what noises/activities annoy the person they dislike and then intentionally do those noises/activities.
I've seen it myself! It's crazy! There's no other animal I know of that can intentionally annoy someone they dislike just for the fun of it. But these guys can/will!
It's said greys have the intelligence of a third grader based on studies and so forth.
So try your best to avoid showing your displeasure at little Anduin's noises! Lest Emily begin mimicking them to get your goat!
Fortunately, little Anduin's screeching will only last for a couple weeks. It won't get worse than it is right now. Only better as he starts eating more on his own. So that's a good thing!
So happy to hear he's doing well!
Is he still nesting in the food cup? (What better place to put him to promote independent eating! LOL)

Re: Losing my mind!!!!
I discovered today that he seems to be just making the noise for fun.... it's pretty much been non-stop(minus when his parents have been shoving food down his throat)
He is being well fed.
He likes to sit and make his begging noise at the top of his lungs, and he's not aiming at ether of his parents nor is making the begging movements most of the time(only right before they feed him)
he's just like a very loud human toddler that's yelling as loud as they can because they like the sound of their voice..... did I mention loud??
I honestly have never heard a bird make this much noise, I swear he doesn't seem to need air... I've never known a bird who could make continuances noise for 8+ hours a day! And trust me, I've known some very very loud birds(I find Conures to be the loudest, followed by Cockatoos)
Has anybody else been around a finch chick this noisy???

Well, my newly fledged Gouldian appears ti be doing something similar, but Gouldis are not as loud as Zebras. Also, where you say that you are losing your mind, I've already lost mine many years ago, so it doesn't affect me as badly.

Re: Losing my mind!!!!
Tolly_Paikea -- Ha! I've seen that once before.
My Squeepers is the most talkative little guy EVER!
He was also a singleton, but he didn't beg a whole lot.
But he is ALWAYS vocalizing. He started right around Anduin's age.
It's quite literally constant --- about 85-90% of the time, he's doing a soft "under his breath" sort of peeping/honking.
It's so constant that I thought he may have a breathing problem!
But it's not a health issue. He can control it. It's not directed to anyone in particular; it's like a bird equivalent of humming. We call it "squeeping."
He just literally loves to hear himself!
When he gets excited, it gets louder.
I've had hundreds of finches over the years and I've never seen (or heard) another like him.
Perhaps your little Anduin is going to be like Squeepers?
Luckily, Squeepers is soft! Always has been.
I bet your little guy is just discovering he can control his voice and it's like a new novelty!

Re: Losing my mind!!!!
Congrats on a healthy fledgie with a fat boy appetite!!
It's a blessing and a curse. 3 or 4 cages of them at once and I want to slam my head into the wall too. You're not alone!
When they get closer to weaning they beg 24/7. A "cheat" to speed up the weaning process is to give the babies a dish of sprouts, insect mix, black oily seeds, egg meal or providing some fresh spray millet on the cage floor. They eventually get curious enough to try it (or bored enough) since it's so conveniently located. Once they realize it's delicious they wean themselves in a few days or so.
If you're already doing that then bless your heart, you're in for a loud ride. LOL
