Sorry just now seeing the additional responses..

No. Mine do not seem to be difficult to breed. (I've just jinxed myself I know). My original pair is laying a nest now. 4 eggs so far.

A hen from their first clutch with a hatch date of June 1 laid her first egg Nov 1, 5 months after her hatch date.

FinchsRUS

How I wish..... But no one around here breeds them. If I want them, I have to order in from down east. The cheapest I can hope for, is $270.00 + tax. Not sure about the shipping (?)

They are gorgeous looking birds.

Elana... I breed strawberries and I am in Edmonton. I have 8 young ones still colouring up from my first pair from 2 clutches - one born in early Aug and one born end of Sept. I just purchased a new hen last week from a Petland store here in Edmonton to pair with one of the males from my first clutch (She was $220!!!.... ) I also have another un-related pair coming in from Ponytail Joe in Peachland BC next week. His pairs are currently going for $200 + gst + shipping. Give him a phone call, or send him an email.

Or, alternatively, you could wait for my 2nd and 3 pairs to produce chicks, and I can make an unrelated pair for you at some point in the future.

FinchsRUS Awesome job with your strawberries. How long did it take them to get used to eating out of those bin feeders? Also, have they been enjoying the cucumber I suggested?

Yes, they do like the cucumber.

It took about a day. I put a flat food dish at the bottom of the cage and then put the feed bins next to the dish. Once they realize there's food in there they start using it consistently while still at the bottom of the cage. And then you can move that anywhere and they are fine with it.

Oh my... =D>
That is oh so tempting.
I could wait for your guys, wouldn't that be lovely. I should probably wait until after Christmas now, so that would be perfect. What are you going to be charging for your babies?

~Elana~

P.S. Do you have any pictures for me to drool over? :-D

I don't have any pictures right now, because they are so fast and skittish... but they look identical to the strawberries that FinchsRUS has posted in this thread.
As for price, I'm not too sure yet...most likely $220/pair. (Pet stores are charging that price for a single bird....)

Hi and thanks.
Will have to think on it. It's a bit of a financial 'ouch'.

FinchsRUS and yegbirdlover,
I just got my first pair of strawberries less than three weeks ago. My male is molting and looks rather 'checkered' right now. He is healthy and active, but doesn't sing. I was wondering if they stop singing while they are molting (like my canary does), how long the molt usually lasts and if this is their normal time of year to molt. I'd appreciate any info you can give me.

Hello, I am not sure where to post this since I am new.
I am new to the finch hobby. My aviary has a pair of Strawberries, a pair of Gouldians, two male owls, two male red head/pied parrots.
The parrots are the newest. When the parrots came, they took over the
sleeping area of the Strawberries. I am not breeding.
I have noticed with this mix, especially with the parrots, the strawberries are at the bottom of the totem pole. The parrots are flighty and have intimidated the male strawberry.
Lately, I've noticed he hasn't been singing very much. He looks thinner, guess at the very top of the cage, and this morning I saw him scratching. He was waiting patiently to eat this morning, but doesn't eat much because he flies from the bigger birds. I am not sure what to look for if your finch is sick. I feed them well, seed, greens, insect delight. I'm going to move the strawberries to another cage tonight.
Any advise would be welcome!!
