Freaking out.. is this big enough?!

Post by EnigmaticHC » Tue Nov 11, 2014 1:40 pm

Help me.. I'm supposed to go pick up our babies tonight, and I am starting to have doubts about the size of my cage. According to the calculator that everyone recommends, it is only big enough for one bird, not two..! I need it for 2 zebra finches..

Please be completely honest.. if it's not big enough, I can go get a different one before I bring them home!

This would be the minimum size you would want. I raise waxbills, which are much more active, so I don't keep my birds in anything smaller than 30x18x18, but I have friends who keep finches in 24x16x16 without problems. If you will be breeding the pair, you will soon need more cages! When breeding, you always need another cage to move the juveniles into when they are weaned from their parents.

If I were you, I would go for something bigger, most esoecially something longer. My Zebras love to fly and are forever on the move. By the time you put in perches, food and water dishes, a bath etc. there won't be a lot of room left over. Part of the fun of Zebras, is watching them fly and enjoy stretching their wings.

My advice, can't err on bigger. As big as you can afford and have room for. Minimum 30/18/18 inches, but I would go a bit bigger if it's in the budget. Then you can decorate with some fake plants, put in a swing (which they will love) and give them room to enjoy life.

Great. Thanks. They seem to be ok for now.. But I will look into a cage upgrade soon then.. find a cage style I really love.. and maybe keep this one just incase there are babies in our future.. lol

If it were a less pushy species I would say it would do. But since you are getting zebs I would go with something 30" wide Minimum
