Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
Thanks lovezebs.
Thanks colt. I think ill have to save that description for future reference and whilst i/we greatly appreciate everyones comments and especially the help,
I have anither question.
"RH/BH PB/WB SF YB Pastel (shows as dilute)"
I think i got these right....
Red head split for black.
Purple breast split for white.
Single factor.
YB .?
pastel (shows as dilute)
My questions are : whats YB ? I feel like someone told me already but i cant see it.
And do pastels sometimes show as something other than dilute ? Or is it just an alternative description that some people prefer?
We have only had zebras before and reaaly appreciate all the help and nice comments.
credit for the successfull clutch goes to my ten yr old daughter who feeds and waters them most days and does a great job of looking after them with a little help, encouragement and additional funding from myself.

RH - Red Head
BH - Black Head
YH - Yellow Head
PB - Purple Breast
WB - White Breast
LB - Lilac Breast
GB - Green Back
YB - Yellow Back
BB - Blue Back
SB - Silver Back
sf - Single Factor
df - Double Factor
And my understanding is that dilute and pastel can be used interchangeably. I could be wrong and someone that knows a bit more than me could say for sure. This is my first year breeding them and I'm loving it. I ended up with so many splits that nest checks are like Christmas...lol

Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
Ah, should have known that one. My memory is like a seive
fortunately the people on this forum are nice and helpfull though ( some forums theres just no point asking questions).
I think ive got it now. The father whilst having a green back is a yellow back and because of the yellow shows as dilute/pastel ?
Your chicks sound nice Ill have a look for the thread later.
Many thanks

Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
"dilute", "pastel" and "silver" are made up terms so they get used in different ways by different people. There is a true Dilute in Australia which is totally different genetically then SF Pastel which complicates things even more especially with a world wide forum.
body colors:
Normal AKA Green
SF Pastel AKA SF Yellow (male birds have one pastel gene) visually green body on a PB bird but yellow body on a WB or LB Sometimes called a "dilute" on PB birds. Black chin will be gray on SF birds.
Pastel AKA Yellow (male birds have 2 pastel genes)
Blue (birds have 2 blue genes)
SF Pastel Blue (male birds have 1 pastel gene and 2 blue genes) visually blue body on a PB bird but white body on a WB or LB Sometimes called a "pastel" on PB birds.
Pastel Blue (male birds have 2 pastel genes and 2 blue genes and hens have 1 pastel and 2 blue genes) Visually a white body bird sometimes called "silver"
*normal and pastel are sex linked genes and hens can only be SF so they are either green or yellow bodied while males need to be DF to show yellow.
*Blue is an autosomal recessive gene so both hens and males need 2 genes to show blue body.

Females are yellow bodied if they have 1 pastel gene, where males need to have 2 Pastel genes to be yellow bodied (DF)

Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
I'm not trying to high Jack somebody else's thread but figured since it is the same topic to post it here. I am new too with my first clutch and trying to figure this stuff out, lol
My yh/wb/yb male was bred to a rh/pb/gb hen.
All four babies are yellow. To have any males my hen would have to be sf correct?

Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
Hens are always SF Pastel (SF Yellow)
With that pair all hens will be visually yellow and males visually green but ALL chicks are SF Pastel AKA SF Yellow
Now if you have WB chicks you could have males that are visually yellow also.

Re: our funny looking goulcian chicks
half of the chicks will be Male RH/OH.PB/WB.SF Yellow (pastel)(show as dilute)
half of the chicks will be FEMALE RH/OH.PB/WB.SF Yellow (pastel) (show as yellow)
your may have splits in the parents, which would change everything.
