BIGGY'S EXTENDED ABDOMEN, CONCERN.
Hello.
I know that some of you have been following the saga of my tiny Socies, who have been dropping like flies.
Biggy, is the only one to survive this far.
Now for a rather odd question. To all those who have raised tiny finches. Biggy's abdomen and bum, appear quite distaded and swollen. I honestly don't know if this is normal or not. He is eating and pooping and peeing. Could you please take a look at this picture and let me know what you think?

Elana, I remember not too long ago someone posted a pic of their infant that had a distended belly. As I recall, it didn't end well. I don't remember what it was, but I want to say it had infection.

This thread is done.
Biggy passed away a few minutes ago, nestled in the palm of my hand.
Elana.

lovezebs, next time I would recommend probiotics, it may be what these youngsters lacked - the belly is a clear sign. Without parents to provide good bacteria, they instead get bellies full of bad ones.
So sorry you've lost them.

So sorry. You tried your best. It is not easy to hand rear finches - ever. Even once experienced at it you often lose these at this very young age.

Aw no. Poor little Biggy.
Rest in peace and fly free, little one.
I'm so sorry, Elana.
FWIW, there's nothing you could have done.
That belly looked infected to me. And unfortunately, with these little ones, once you see obvious symptoms, it's usually too late because they don't have the immune system to fight it as an adult would.
Probiotics are always good and recommended for these babies.
But even with probiotics, they get sick and die, so it's not a guarantee.
At least he died while surrounded by love. I daresay he experienced more love in his short life than many birds see in an entire lifetime.
So there's that.
But that doesn't ease the hurt. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose them, one by one. Even when you try not to get attached, it inevitably happens.
You did your best. Sometimes our best just isn't enough.
But it's more than he would have had otherwise, so I try to take consolation in that. He lived days longer than he would have otherwise and when he did pass, he was warm, fed and loved -- not alone on the cold cage floor.
I'm sorry, Elana. I wish I could have helped somehow.

Sorry to hear about Biggy. So odd that these birds would raise the babies of other birds but not their own.
