new weanlings fluffing up & sleeping off and on

Post by rancho2 » Fri Nov 28, 2014 7:34 pm

these are my first weanlings ever. should i be concerned or do they get more tired flying all over the place? none of the adults are doing this.

New fledglings do get tired and need naps. It's not unusual for some to actually go back into the nest for little naps throughout the day.

When you mention fluffed up, how fluffed are they? It's possible that they are a bit cold. Maybe a nice warm light over them will help.

What species are your babies? Are they starting to go through a molting period? If that's the case, then it's fairly normal for them to appear a little under the weather.

Are they eating and drinking alright? Are the parents still feeding? It's always a good idea to keep an eye on these little ones.

Agreed with Elana.

The youngsters do tend to nap quite a bit more than the adults (just like young humans.)

And they tend to fluff a bit more often than the adults. They're more sensitive to stressors.
If they're coming into their adult plumage, that could be a sufficient stress to cause a bit of fluffing.

I'd offer a heat lamp for sure.
I'd also offer some electrolytes, like NV powder or a homemade electrolyte solution.

Check to see if the parents are still feeding them, they usually do quite awhile after the young have fledged.
