I suggest that you add Cal-D-Solve to your birds egg food before and during breeding/egglaying (use as directed on the jar). It is made by AviTech. Glamorous Gouldians carries it and Terri can get it out to you quick. AviTech also makes a great multi vitamin and mineral amino acid supplement that I use a few times a week in the soft food/eggfood/chopped veggies. It is the AviVita Gold...Terri carries that also. Both contain D3 which is essential in the delivery of calcium in the body.

Here is her site she is extremely knowledgeable and has helped us greatly on our fbk group page with tough medical issues. http://glamgouldians.com/ scroll down to find the products.

Broccoli is a great food and should be given in moderation.... try other dark leafy greens like chopped Kale and Collard greens. Our avian vet recommends that if not using a powdered diet to use the powdered vitamins in a little soft food to ensure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals they need. She also likes the idea of fresh clean water...some birds will not take liquid vitamins in the water or may be put off by the smell and not drink enough to get everything they need, she recommends adding the supplement to the soft food. I raise a lot od societies, zebra, hookbills owls java and chestnut breasted mannikins and they all take the softfood with vitamins mixed in...add it to you eggfood.

Sorry for the loss of your male. The soft shell jelly egg is due to a calcium deficiency, if she has been laying lots of eggs she may have depleted her calcium reserves. When this happens the she will start pulling calcium from other parts of the body...her bones. I suggest you rest her and help build those reserves back up. Keep her warm with a little heat lamp on one side of the cage that she can go to if needed especially since you at particularly cold up in your area of the states during the winter months.

I would also avoid a male zebra as delray pointed out since the male will mate and can hybridize with hen. Another hen or male society, they like their own kind and tend to like groups...they also do well as a trio of societies.

As far as your male passing, did you examine the body was he thin? Did you look at his abdomen for any white or yellow patches under the skin or feel for lumps/bumps. Was the breast bone sharp like a "V" or well rounded, full?

just administer the vitamins as directed on the label. Don't put vitamin drops directly on her beak, you might overdose her, especially not every day. Make sure she has cuttlebone, and oystershell grit. You can also grate cuttlebone into her egg food.

Okay, thanks for all the helpful replies. And cindy I might just try that calcium liquid. I just got to reading these comments and already had the bird purchased before I read the replies. So, when I went to my local bird store I didn't see any finches so I asked the store manager if she had any. She said she didn't know and went to check in the back. The store manager came back and showed me and she only had one finch available and it was a pied male zebra. It looked very young. She said she just sold its parents and 2 of the siblings. It was a male and it lacked the orange cheek patches but they were showing and will bloom in a month or too I suppose. I didn't want to leave the store empty handed so I took him in. I couldn't leave him in that store by himself because he was the only finch left. When I got home, I stuck him in my hospital/quarantine cage and he was quite, but as soon as he heard the female he started to beep. And, to my surprise I haven't caught him do the mating song yet. He seems like he is a few months old. I believe that the pet store sold his dad to quickly and he never learned his "special song". As of now he is sitting on the perch trying to sleep. The female worries me though she hasn't passed an egg today. I don't know how to assist her if I should. I won't introduce the male to her until he is mature and she is back up to par. What are your thoughts? Here is a picture of Frankie the new guy I just got and Isabella the egg bound hen. Frankie looks thin. Isabella doesn't puff up and looks normal but trust me she is egg bound. Oh and also another reason I can tell Frankie is very young is that he can't fly that good. He can but he still acts like a fledgling. :| delray dutch wikifarm cindy Sheather

The male may not be able to fly well if he was kept in a to small of a cage.... at the age he is now they should be flying pretty well.

If the hen is eggbound I would not put the two together right now..the added stress of a new bird and he may try to mate her will complicte her situation...she needs to get well first. Keep them separate for now.

Make sure She has a heat lamp and administer drops of liquid calcium to the side of her beak

from another topic...you can use Human Grade Liquid Calcium from the pharmacy in a pinch/emergency...it must have D3 in it..you can buy it over the counter
1 drop first hour

1 drop second hour (noticed an improvement)

Then 1 drop 3rd hour.

Then give 2 drop 2hrs later at least get 3/4 drops into the bird first day if you can

That's a bummer that they only had a male. :?

As Cindy said. The cage may be too small. As far as I can see, your quarantine cage is the size of the picture you took. Even though he is being separated just for now, and it still seems tiny for flight room. He should be flying at this age. Good luck [-o<

She hadn't laid an egg today and it looks like she has an egg in her abdomen. What do I do? I don't want to hurt her. Yesterday she laid the egg at night. Do I wait till night? I don't want her to die. And as for the male he is fine for now. The cage is a bit small but i will upgrade later. The new male won't eat. It seems he stopped eating because he doesn't have a friend. I put the cages close by but he just sits on the perch I don't want to lose him too. delray
