I think I'm in trouble....

Post by khut » Wed Dec 31, 2014 4:11 pm

I'm expecting my double flight cage to arrive Friday, and I've been considering some Diamond Doves to go in with the zebras. I saw an ad in the paper for Diamond Doves so I called to check on availability. The lady who answered was just precious, and we visited a little while. It turns out she breeds Lady Gouldians as well and has four that are just now ready to go. :D

I love the beautiful colors of the Gouldians, but hadn't really considered them at this point because I never dreamed I'd find them anywhere close. (Unless you want cockatiels or lovebirds, birds are really hard to find in Arkansas...I don't know why...).

So....now I'm reevaluating my plans.

Do any of you keep Lady Gouldians in with Zebras? Could it work in a double flight cage or is that too small? And if it wouldn't work, there's always the divider or the separate cage I have now. Hmmmm.

I would not put Gouldians with Zebras because Zebras are more territorial and are likely to be aggressive.

4 Gouldians would not be too many for 1/2 a flight cage. Would the other half be enough for your zebras? did you get the diamond doves?

I say order another cage. Problem solved.

I haven't gotten the Diamond Doves or the Gouldians....yet. 8)

I wanted to wait for the new cage to arrive first. I told the woman it would probably be Saturday before I could get any of them. I probably won't get both Diamond Doves and Gouldians at this point (and while she has 4 Gouldians available, I'd only get 2)...that wasn't in the budget. I'm just concerned I'll never find Gouldians this close again. :( She mentioned that her health wasn't the greatest and that she might even be willing to let me take the breeding pair, so I'm not sure she'll have any later on.

I have the 30x18x18 flight cage that the 2 Zebras are in right now, so technically, with the divider, I would have three cages available.

Decisions, decisions. LOL!

My gouldians are stronger than zebras

My aviary is 2.5m wide and 5m long

I put 2 gouldians in with 120 zebras. ...my gouldians are the boss....I find the gouldians the more aggressive species

When breeding my gouldians act like hawks....120 zebras are no match for just my original pair of Goulds

Everything I've read says the zebras will attack the Goulds. Seems your experience is different. Go figure.

I'm not really interested in breeding if that makes any difference.

Hi Karla.

What is the size of this double cage. They come in different sizes, so it's hard to say.

I have had Zebbies with Gouldians. The Gouldians stand up for themselves, but that's in a large flight. It also depends on the individual birds of course. Some birds are more aggressive, some more timid, so you really wouldn't know untill you tried.

I wouldn't put more than two small finches in an 18/18/30 cage. Maybe Socies, but not Zebs or Gouldians.

I can recommend Gouldians, as lovely birds to have around. They are beautiful, quiet, and sweet natured.

Good luck

Can't comment on Diamond Doves, have never had them.

The double flight is 62Lx18.5Dx36H. It has a removable divider. I was thinking that with lots of greenery for cover and plenty of food and water stations it might work for four birds...2 zebs and 2 Goulds.

I'm afraid to pass on the Gouldians. I'll have an easier time finding diamond doves later on than Gouldians.

Go for it!!! I would.
The flight is more than big enough for four and more. What make is it? I'm always on the look out for good deals on flight cages.

I guaranty you will love ♡ the Gouldians, just make sure they are not too old, if she's offering her breeding pair. Enjoy!!!

She has four just old enough to go from that pair. She mentioned that they don't sell as well around here so she might let the breeding pair go, but I don't think I'm up for that yet.

I believe the cage is an off brand, but it was only $220 shipped so I'm going to give it a whirl. I read that someone on here has them and is happy with them. I liked that it had feeder doors in addition to the larger doors. It had mixed reviews, but that seemed to be mostly due to the instructions. ( the A&E had the same issues). My husband assures me he can figure it out, so I went ahead and ordered it. We shall see.....LOL!

Knut,

You could always try them all together then put the divider up if needed.

If you are not likely to find Gouldians nearby soon don't miss the opportunity. You will not regret it if you get them. It sounds like you might if you don't get them though. You will love them and you have the space. Let us know and share pics when you have them, whatever you decide. Can't wait to see :D

That's the same reason I didn't buy gouldians in the first place....all I kept reading was that they were weak and zebs were stronger

When I first decided to keep finches everyone told me to stay clear of Goulds

Now that I have had both zebs and Goulds. ......I can tell you Goulds are far superior to zebs

I think I'm going to go for the gold...er....Goulds. (sorry, couldn't resist) I have admired their colors for awhile now. I'll have a backup cage if I need it, so any issues can be sorted out.

And if she's truly looking to thin her flock and we can make a deal on some diamond doves....well, who can resist a bargain? :D

Not me, Karla, not me...
A bargain, is a bargain, and no one in their right mind would refuse. :-D

If you are going to get two, and don't want to breed, then I would get two males. If they are from the same clutch, then they are siblings, and you don't want accidental breeding between brother and sister . Never a good idea.
